Eddie Jordan Labels Red Bull’s Form ‘Catastrophic’ as Verstappen Struggles in F1’s Italian GP
Red Bull's condition deemed as "disastrous" | Strategy "sabotaging" Max Verstappen
"You're deceiving yourself by putting faith in a wind tunnel that has clearly led to erroneous calculations."
Former Formula 1 team leader Eddie Jordan has labeled Red Bull's performance as "disastrous" after a challenging race at the Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull faced their most challenging weekend of the 2024 Formula 1 season to date, with Max Verstappen crossing the finish line in sixth place, almost 38 seconds after the race victor, Charles Leclerc.
This situation has exposed Red Bull to risks at the pinnacle of both competitions, with their advantage over McLaren narrowed down to merely eight points.
Verstappen holds a 62-point lead over Lando Norris in the F1 drivers' standings, with eight races left in the season.
During the most recent edition of the Formula for Success podcast, Jordan shared his thoughts on the challenges facing Red Bull and discussed his approach if he were at the helm.
"What was our initial configuration? What did our setup look like when we were ahead by 15 seconds and easily in the lead? What alterations have been made? Point out the improvements to me because it's clear that these supposed enhancements haven't been effective," he elaborated.
"You're deceiving yourself by attempting to have faith in a wind tunnel that has clearly provided you with inaccurate data."
"Let's return to our previous position and proceed from that point. Ensure everything remains as is until we can definitively ensure it's faster. That's my stance on the matter. It's become a disaster."
Jordan thinks that Christian Horner, the head of Red Bull, faces a huge challenge in making improvements as the year comes to a close.
"Christian Horner is facing a significant challenge as he needs to take firm action and enforce discipline," he further stated.
Everyone had been criticizing Perez, yet perhaps Perez and his vehicle are exhibiting their actual pace, and Max's performance reflects his true capabilities. Without a question, he stands as the top Formula 1 driver currently, in my view. Thus, securing positions like fifth, fourth, or even sixth must be incredibly frustrating for him right now.
Webber Says Verstappen Shouldering Red Bull's Burden
Ex-Red Bull racer Mark Webber believes the cautionary signals have been evident for a while.
Webber believes that Verstappen’s exceptional talent has frequently been the key factor in securing his victories for Red Bull.
"Webber described it as a perfectly functioning system. According to him, Max has been the backbone of the team throughout the current season. He highlighted performances in Barcelona, Silverstone, and Imola. Specifically, he pointed out Lewis Hamilton's remarkable victory at Silverstone, but emphasized that Max's second-place finish was exceptional. Webber praised Max for delivering some truly outstanding performances.
"The vehicle, referred to by its owner as 'times', has transformed into what he describes as a monster. The outcome hinges on minor improvements. A slight recovery could lead to unpredictable changes."
