Despite Dominant Start, Lando Norris Claims McLaren and Mercedes ‘Pretty Even’ Ahead of British GP
Lando Norris insists McLaren is "fairly matched" with Mercedes despite their strong beginning at the British Grand Prix.
"I believe we are quite comparable to Mercedes; they appear to be just as fast as we are," he stated.
Lando Norris has minimized McLaren's strong beginning to the F1 British Grand Prix weekend, stating that Mercedes' performance is "fairly equal" to theirs.
Norris led in both practice sessions at Silverstone, kicking off his home weekend impressively.
McLaren's Oscar Piastri secured a spot in the top three twice, showcasing the team's remarkable speed.
Over the past year, McLaren has typically excelled on fast tracks such as Silverstone, which gives Norris hope for securing his first victory on home turf.
Looking back on the day, Norris commented, "It was a positive beginning to the weekend. The morning session, however, didn't feel very smooth."
"We made some adjustments and I was able to get it into a better range, which is crucial in this area because it can be unpredictable and dangerous at high speeds. It was challenging, but I'm pleased with the results. We made significant strides."
"In my opinion, we are on par with Mercedes in terms of speed. They appear to be as fast as we are. They simply didn't push their engine to its full potential during the final run."
“We’re doing well, but there’s still room for improvement.”
As is common in the UK, the weather this weekend has been quite changeable.
Although most of the time was dry, rain impacted the final moments of the second practice session.
In a similar manner, the Formula 3 qualifying session, held between the two Formula 1 practice sessions, also experienced rainy conditions.
Even though Norris usually performs well in wet conditions, such as in Canada, he prefers the weather to stay dry.
"I like both situations," he mentioned. "When it's a home race, it's better if it's dry. We're performing well and I don't want to deviate from that."
“However, it's Silverstone! It's the UK! I'm prepared for anything, though I'd rather it stay dry.”
Discussing the home environment, he remarked, "Quite a bit. I do wish the weather had been nicer, but at least it didn't rain. I really enjoy it. It's lively and full of activity. I make an effort to reciprocate their support."
