Daniel Ricciardo Outspeeds Marc Marquez in Thrilling Red Bull Boat Race Ahead of Spanish GP
Daniel Ricciardo triumphs over Marc Marquez in Red Bull boat race
Daniel Ricciardo claimed victory against Marc Marquez in a Red Bull boat race just before the Spanish Formula 1 event in Barcelona this weekend.
Eight-time Formula 1 race victor Daniel Ricciardo competed against MotoGP champion Marc Marquez in the Alinghi Red Bull Racing sailing competition.
The two athletes backed by Red Bull transitioned from land-based vehicles to watercraft, achieving speeds nearing 90 km/h.
In the end, Ricciardo secured first place, finishing ahead of the rider who will join the factory Ducati team in 2025.
After his victory, Ricciardo expressed, "When you emerge from the water while foiling, the boats accelerate rapidly, and their maneuverability and precision are remarkable."
"You feel the wind just as we do, and just like Marc experiences it on his bike, but unless it's a rainy race, we don't really get much water."
"Occasionally, a wave crashes over you, leaving you drenched."
Marquez, currently holding third place in the MotoGP rankings, trails behind Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia. He has emerged as a standout rider since transitioning to Ducati after spending 11 seasons with Honda.
Adapting to an entirely new pace, Marquez remarked, "The main question I had was about how they acquire the knowledge and comprehension necessary for their tasks."
"It's extremely challenging to sense the internal dynamics of the boat because once it starts gliding, everything becomes incredibly smooth."
"The pace felt entirely different. Although it might be slower in terms of kilometres per hour, the sensation of speed was incredibly intense."
"When you're out there, it doesn't feel like you're airborne. But then I spotted Daniel's boat gliding beside us, and it hit me that we were flying too. We were foiling effortlessly."
Despite a challenging comeback to full-time racing with Red Bull, Ricciardo displayed impressive performance in Canada, earning his first points in a grand prix this season.
The Australian driver secured an impressive fifth place, missing the pole position by just under two tenths of a second.
Ricciardo elaborated on the sailing boats he and Marquez competed in, noting, "The design and construction of these boats are very reminiscent of the cockpit in a Formula One vehicle."
"They are highly affected by the wind, so aerodynamics plays a significant role too. It's quite similar to our work, where tiny adjustments are crucial and everything requires careful precision."
