Clash of Titans: Can Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia Harmonize as Ducati Teammates in 2025?
Marc Marquez as a teammate: "a whole new challenge," and "can it ever be peaceful"?
Questions arise if Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia can collaborate effectively as teammates. Matt Birt expresses doubts.
By 2025, MotoGP is expected to feature exceptionally star-studded line-ups in its factory teams.
Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta will be at the forefront of the Red Bull KTM team for KTM, whereas Jorge Martin and Marco Bezzecchi will head the Aprilia Racing initiative.
However, the pair that will attract the most attention is Lenovo Ducati, featuring Marc Marquez and Francesco Bagnaia.
Marquez, who has maintained an unbeaten record against his teammates in any full or half MotoGP season since he joined the competition, is now joining Bagnaia's team, following the Italian's consecutive MotoGP championship victories.
According to MotoGP commentator Birt, Bagnaia opposed Ducati parting ways with either of his last two teammates, including Enea Bastianini, because he felt confident he was superior to them.
Discussing the relationship between Bagnaia and Marquez as teammates, Birt informed Foxsports: "Pecco always supported having Jack and Enea as his teammates because he was confident he could outperform them."
"Marc, you’re discussing an entirely different situation. Pecco has often mentioned the sense of harmony within the Ducati team. Can that same harmony exist if Marc Marquez is your teammate?"
"Pecco is likely aware of the past events involving Marc and Valentino Rossi. It's probable that there have been discussions between Rossi and his standout protégé. Rossi has probably advised him, saying something like, 'Be cautious, Marc will attempt to disrupt you,' because that's Marc's typical behavior with his colleagues."
Pecco will welcome this development, as he understands that defeating Marquez in the upcoming years will solidify his status as one of the greatest of all time.
Despite his initial reluctance to have Marc as a teammate, he sees this as an opportunity to demonstrate his own abilities.
"When you consider the names on the list of all-time wins and championships, he is already held in high esteem. However, if he manages to defeat Marc while riding the same bike for the same team, then hats off to him."
"You have to give him credit, as it proves he's genuinely one of the greatest of all time."
Birt continues to perceive Marquez as just as merciless as he was prior to joining Ducati.
It's evident that Honda's performance problems hindered Marquez, but since his move to Gresini, he has appeared to return to top form.
Birt commented, "I believe his ruthless nature never really disappeared; we just haven't noticed it in the last few years because he hasn't been competitive enough," Birt explained.
"Marc is extremely smart and highly skilled at mastering every facet of the game, including the psychological tactics."
He single-handedly dominated the rider market, outsmarting all his competitors and forcing Ducati into a difficult position. In just one day, Marc managed to shift the situation entirely to his advantage.
"Ducati couldn't resist the opportunity to collaborate with Marquez and witness his potential within their factory team. The prospect of losing him was too great a risk. They had access to data that others didn't and recognized how impressive he was on a year-old bike, leading them to conclude, 'We can't afford to let him go.'"
"Ducati preferred to release Jorge Martin and Enea Bastianini, as it would have been absurd to let such skilled riders join a competing manufacturer, knowing their exceptional abilities."
