Christian Horner Unfazed by Adrian Newey’s Aston Martin Move, Focuses on Red Bull’s Future Amid Rising Competition
Is Christian Horner more concerned about Adrian Newey moving to Ferrari or McLaren?
Christian Horner questions if Aston Martin poses a lesser threat.
Christian Horner, the head of the Red Bull Formula 1 team, stated that their team is concentrating on their own performance and not preoccupied with any possible competition from Aston Martin after Adrian Newey joined them.
Newey played a crucial role in Red Bull's championship victories with Sebastian Vettel from 2010 to 2013, and more recently with Max Verstappen from 2021 to 2023.
Earlier this year, Red Bull announced that Newey would be departing from the team. On Tuesday, just before the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Aston revealed that they have signed the renowned designer for 2025.
Adrian Newey's move to Aston Martin coincides with Red Bull's decline in performance in 2024, as McLaren is catching up in both championship contests.
In an interview with Sky F1, Horner responded to a question about whether he was less concerned about Newey joining Aston, considering them "less of a threat" than a direct competitor. He said, “If Aston builds an incredible car and Lance Stroll secures a championship in 2026, you’ll agree it was the right decision.”
"Honestly, all we can do now is hope for his success moving forward."
"This team has great ambitions, and Lawrence Stroll is a highly driven individual."
"However, other teams like Ferrari, Mercedes, and McLaren are also formidable rivals. Therefore, we are concentrating on our own performance."
Horner is confident that Red Bull's technical team possesses significant talent and expertise, ensuring continued success even after Newey leaves.
"To start, Adrian spent nearly two decades with us, and we shared many wonderful moments during that time," he stated.
"He’s not just a friend, he’s also my daughter’s godfather, and together we accomplished some remarkable things during that period."
"In the past eight or nine years, he almost left in 2014, and from that point on, we had to ensure that we were prepared to take over and continue effectively if he decided to go."
“He’s clearly been engaged in various other ventures during this time, such as Valkyrie and more recently the RB17. So, when he decided to join Aston, gaining equity in the company, I understand that the entire organization will essentially be under his supervision. He evidently remains driven.”
"The only thing we can do now is hope for his success."
"However, we will cherish the memories of the time he spent with us, even as life moves forward."
"We have an excellent squad with significant talent and depth. Manchester United continued to secure victories even after Eric Cantona's departure."
“Change is essential, and I believe we possess the capability and resources to continue advancing.”
