Charles Leclerc Urges Caution Despite Ferrari’s Monza Triumph: ‘Upgrades Not Enough to Win Races Until Season End
Charles Leclerc cautions that Ferrari's improvements are ‘insufficient’ for ‘winning races for the rest of the season’
"Will it be adequate for securing victories throughout the remainder of the season? I doubt it, but we've definitely made significant progress."
Charles Leclerc has cautioned that Ferrari must enhance their performance to consistently compete with McLaren throughout the rest of the 2024 F1 season.
Leclerc secured his second win of the season by effectively using a one-stop strategy to outpace McLaren's Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Prior to Piastri's second pit stop, Leclerc was trailing by five seconds, underscoring that McLaren had the fastest car at Monza.
Ferrari unveiled an important update for the Italian Grand Prix, focusing on resolving their issues with bouncing.
During the FIA press conference following the Monza race, Leclerc advised Ferrari to "exercise caution."
"We need to be careful," he mentioned. "Following Monaco, we've experienced the four most challenging races of the season, as Monaco's conditions were uniquely suited to our car back then. Monza, too, is a very unique and distinctive track."
“There were many straight sections but few turns. We also had a rear wing specifically designed for this track, which contributed to our victory today. Additionally, we implemented another upgrade that I believe has brought us closer to McLaren. However, I don’t think it’s sufficient to make our car the one to beat for the remainder of the season on other circuits.”
The speaker expressed satisfaction about achieving a milestone in Italy, despite acknowledging that there remains significant work to be done.
Although Leclerc has had a challenging period since the Monaco race, he is only 24 points behind Norris in the drivers' standings.
In the constructors' championship, Ferrari trails Red Bull by only 39 points.
However, Leclerc has tempered expectations, referencing similar discussions about a championship bid after his victory in Monaco.
"We showed great performance this weekend, but Baku might be a completely different scenario, and Singapore will likely be different again. So, we need to start fresh. We managed to reset between Monaco and Montreal, but as demonstrated, the shift from one weekend to the next was significant."
"We then experienced three or four of the most challenging races of the season as we worked to figure out the issues with our car. Hopefully, we won't face another series of tough races moving forward, and I believe that won't happen."
"However, it's crucial that both the team and the external expectations remain grounded and don't skyrocket from one race to the next, as this isn't realistic."
"Have we made progress? Yes. Is it sufficient to start winning races for the rest of the season? I don't believe so, but we've definitely moved in the right direction."
