Charles Leclerc Unveils Ferrari’s Internal Debate Over McLaren’s Controversial Rear Wing
Charles Leclerc states that Ferrari has held internal discussions regarding McLaren's "controversial" rear wing design.
Charles Leclerc mentioned that Ferrari has had internal discussions about the "controversial" rear wing used by their F1 competitor, McLaren.
In advance of the upcoming Singapore Grand Prix this weekend, the FIA, which oversees Formula 1, announced that they are "assessing data and any new evidence" related to McLaren's rear wing that came to light during the Baku event.
Broadcast images from the Azerbaijan Grand Prix seemed to capture a section of McLaren's rear wing bending upward on the straightaways, sparking new examination amid a continuing controversy over flexible wings.
Leclerc confirmed to the media in Singapore, including Motorsport, that a conversation has indeed already taken place.
"Well, in my opinion, Fred Vasseur, who is the team principal at Ferrari, will provide more detailed information on this issue. From what I've heard, it's quite contentious, to say the least. So, I'll stop there and let Fred elaborate further on the matter."
Charles Leclerc secured a second-place finish following Oscar Piastri in Baku and expressed his astonishment at McLaren's impressive speed on the straights during the race.
"It was a smart maneuver," the driver from Monaco remarked about Piastri’s decisive overtake that won the race. "When I noticed him taking the inside line, I was aware of his position. I recognized it as his chance to overtake, but it didn't concern me beyond that."
"I realized he might get ahead, but I was just beginning to warm up my tires and didn't want to stress them. Therefore, I chose not to make overly aggressive defensive moves."
"I was mistaken because his speed in a straight line was incredibly fast, and after that, I never got the chance to overtake him again."
"I believe I did everything I could during the attacks. My defense could have been stronger, though. But once more, I was unaware of how fast they were on the straightaways afterward."
During the FIA press conference on Thursday, Piastri asserted that McLaren's rear wing complies with regulations.
"As long as it clears all the evaluations – and we undergo numerous tests, it consistently clears them, so it definitely isn't the secret ingredient to our competitiveness," he stated. "It's within the rules, it passes every test, so I'm quite satisfied with it."
On the other hand, teammate Lando Norris expressed that he feels "proud" of McLaren's so-called 'mini DRS' innovation.
"All the tests have been conducted and everything complies with legal standards," he clarified. "We are maximizing our efforts, which is the essence of Formula 1—pushing the boundaries within the regulations. We've passed all evaluations, and the FIA is satisfied."
"I feel proud and pleased with the team's efforts – they're challenging boundaries, which is essential if you aim to compete at the highest level and go up against those who are also renowned for pushing every possible limit."
"I feel an increased sense of pride in the team for striving to excel in every possible aspect. In the past, we didn't have the opportunity to do this, but now that we do, I'm extremely pleased."
"In my view, it's quite fascinating to witness."
