Can Adrian Newey Propel Fernando Alonso to a Third F1 Title with Aston Martin?
Can Fernando Alonso secure his third F1 championship with Adrian Newey's expertise?
The partnership between Fernando Alonso and Adrian Newey at Aston Martin brings championship aspirations.
Fernando Alonso will be thrilled by Adrian Newey joining Aston Martin.
On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Adrian Newey, who is often considered the best car designer in the history of Formula 1, will be joining Aston Martin after leaving Red Bull in the spring of 2025. This announcement represents a significant move by the British team.
Aston Martin has successfully outpaced Red Bull's competitors to bring on board Adrian Newey, following the news in May that he would depart Milton Keynes after a 19-year stint. This move allows the 65-year-old to collaborate with F1 legend and two-time world champion Fernando Alonso.
Newey understands the challenge that awaits him. He isn't stepping into an already successful team, and Aston Martin has a significant journey ahead before they can become leading contenders in Formula 1.
Following an impressive rise in 2023 that positioned Aston Martin as the closest competitors to Red Bull after the winter, the team from Silverstone has since slipped down the rankings in Formula 1 over the last year.
Before Newey's transfer was officially announced, Alonso noted that even with his impressive resume—boasting 25 world championship titles (12 for drivers and 13 for constructors)—his presence won't bring an immediate solution.
Alonso commented on the speculation about Newey joining the Italian Grand Prix, stating that he believes the responsibility to make improvements does not fall on just one person.
"It's about focusing on our current resources and output. We need to identify what is progressing well and what is not, in order to better prepare for 2025."
Nevertheless, this will significantly benefit Aston Martin, which has been actively hiring new talent following substantial financial investments.
In April 2022, Aston Martin brought on board Dan Fallows, previously associated with Red Bull, as their technical director. Additionally, they recruited Andy Cowell, who was formerly the head of engines at Mercedes, and enlisted Ferrari's Enrico Cardile to take on the role of chief technical officer.
Starting in 2026, Aston Martin will cease to use Mercedes engines as Formula 1 enters a new phase of engine rules. Instead, they will collaborate with Honda, transitioning into an official works team.
Since 2019, Honda has been providing engines to Red Bull. After a challenging comeback to Formula 1 in 2015 with McLaren—a period likely still haunting Alonso—the Japanese company now proudly offers the top-performing power unit in the sport.
As Aston Martin nears the completion of their advanced, multi-million pound factory and wind tunnel, the addition of Newey is seen as the crucial element that could transform the team into serious contenders for the world championship in the near future.
Alonso, currently the most senior driver in the F1 lineup, extended his contract with Aston Martin earlier this year, securing his position with the team through the end of 2026. By that time, he will be 45 years old.
The Spanish driver has expressed that he has no intention of retiring soon and believes he is in the best shape of his life. The chance to drive Formula 1 cars designed by Newey is likely to encourage Alonso to extend his career even further.
Martin Brundle mentioned to Sky Sports that Aston Martin will need a considerable amount of time to return to the front of the pack, achieve consistent victories, and eventually compete for a championship.
"By the time that happens, the question is whether he will still have the speed or even be present…"
"The response is affirmative, as long as Fernando is present at the moment the magic takes place."
Following numerous failed career attempts and close calls with winning championships, could Newey’s brilliance be the key Alonso needs to break his ten-year streak without a win, and ultimately help him secure his elusive third world title?
