Adrian Newey Explains Move to Aston Martin: The Influence of Lawrence Stroll and the Search for a New Challenge
Adrian Newey discloses workout sessions and the distinct influence of Lawrence Stroll
Renowned F1 designer Adrian Newey shares his reasons for opting to join Aston Martin, despite having multiple opportunities elsewhere.
Renowned F1 designer Adrian Newey has disclosed the main reasons for his choice to become part of Aston Martin.
The renowned 65-year-old designer is set to begin his role as Aston Martin’s Managing Technical Partner on March 1, 2025, after departing from Red Bull. Sources indicate that Newey has agreed to a five-year deal that could be valued at up to £30 million annually.
Adrian Newey disclosed that the decisive factor in his choice was the significant impact of Aston Martin's team owner, Lawrence Stroll. The Canadian billionaire's grand vision to transform the Silverstone-based team into strong contenders for the world championship ultimately persuaded Newey.
During a press event hosted by Aston Martin at Silverstone on Tuesday, Newey mentioned, "Lawrence and I have had an on-and-off acquaintance over the years. We frequently encounter each other at the gym, especially during races in the Middle East and Far East."
"When I informed everyone about my decision to leave the previous team, I was greatly honored to receive numerous offers from different teams."
However, Lawrence's dedication, commitment, and enthusiasm are truly charming and convincing. The fact is, if we look back two decades, what we now refer to as team principals were actually the team owners, such as Frank Williams, Ron Dennis, Eddie Jordan, and others.
"In today's world, Lawrence stands out as the sole genuinely engaged team owner. His active involvement definitely creates a unique atmosphere."
Returning to a traditional approach and having the opportunity to become both a shareholder and a partner is a novel experience for me. This unique aspect is something I am eagerly anticipating. The decision felt very natural.
At one point, many believed Newey would team up with Lewis Hamilton at Ferrari, and there were also rumors connecting him to McLaren and Williams. Ultimately, Aston Martin emerged victorious in securing his sought-after expertise.
When questioned about his decision to choose Aston Martin instead of other teams, Newey responded, "Lawrence, it was an obvious choice! But on a serious note, I felt I was in need of a fresh challenge."
Towards the end of April, I came to the conclusion that I needed a change. I had extensive conversations with my wife Mandy about our next steps. We considered various options, including traveling the world by sailboat or pursuing a new venture like the America's Cup.
"We took a break, and I realized I was fortunate to have accomplished my childhood dream of becoming a designer in the field of motor racing. I don't even refer to myself as an engineer."
"And I can truly say that everything else has been an added benefit, having accomplished that right after graduating from university."
"I certainly never anticipated the incredible opportunities I've had the privilege to be a part of, but it's crucial to stay true to oneself and maintain a sense of freshness. Therefore, I believed it was time for a new challenge, which is why I decided to take a break."
