Augusto Fernandez Faces Uncertain Future in MotoGP: ‘We Have Half a Year Left to Turn Things Around
The MotoGP rider facing the greatest risk speaks with stark candor.
"I’m unsure about what the future holds for next year, but we still have six months remaining."
Augusto Fernandez seems to be the most probable rider to end up without a MotoGP bike next season.
The 2025 MotoGP season will showcase a revamped KTM factory team with Brad Binder and Pedro Acosta, while Maverick Vinales and Enea Bastianini will ride for Tech3.
As a consequence, Jack Miller and Fernandez have been let go.
"I'm currently in the most difficult position," Fernandez shared with Relevo regarding his poor performance before it was announced that he would be substituted.
"I'm aware that there's still a significant amount of time remaining. We have more than six months left."
"So… it has the potential to be torturous."
"I'm unsure about what the future holds for next year, but we still have six months remaining."
"I can't imagine myself struggling that much the entire time."
"We need to find the strength to change our circumstances, as we can learn a lot from the positive insights shared by other riders."
"We need to focus on enjoying the rest of this season, and then we'll evaluate our position next year. For now, let's at least make some positive changes."
A year ago, KTM demonstrated significant confidence in Fernandez by opting not to demote him in favor of the more seasoned Pol Espargaro.
However, Acosta's outstanding first year with Tech3 has created challenges for his colleague Fernandez.
In 2022, Fernandez secured the Moto2 championship title, yet he has struggled to perform at his best in the top-tier category.
Currently searching for a new position for the upcoming season, chances to join the MotoGP lineup are scarce.
Gresini Racing is in search of a new rider to take Marc Marquez's place, while Trackhouse Racing is considering the possibility of swapping out one of their existing
Honda and Yamaha already possess more seasoned alternatives.
Speculation is swirling that Fernandez might consider switching to World Superbikes next year unless he can dramatically improve his performance in the remaining races this season.
It is important to recall that Fabio di Giannantonio unexpectedly revived his MotoGP career last year. At a time when he was unemployed and without any promising prospects, he suddenly began performing at the peak of his abilities.
Fernandez may require a comparable solution to remain in MotoGP.
