Alpine’s Crossroads: Jack Doohan Touted as Potential Ocon Replacement for Canadian Grand Prix Amidst Team Tensions
"Speculation in the racing circuit" about the potential replacement for Esteban Ocon in Canada
"It's not that I believe Ocon should be replaced…"
There's buzz around Jack Doohan possibly stepping in for Esteban Ocon at the upcoming Formula 1 race in Canada.
Alpine team leader Bruno Famin expressed strong frustration over potential repercussions, such as sidelining Ocon for the upcoming race, following his crash with a teammate in Monaco.
Ocon created quite a commotion when he collided with Pierre Gasly during the first lap of the Monaco Grand Prix last weekend.
"Speculation is circulating through the circuit that Jack Doohan might make his first grand prix appearance in Canada," mentioned F1 Nation podcast's Tom Clarkson.
"People are discussing that."
"Jack truly excelled in his performance for the team on Friday evening."
He traveled from Nice to the UK on Friday. He visits Enstone, where he spends time on the simulator, experimenting with different configurations until 3:30 in the morning.
"He doesn't retire for the night. Instead, he returns to Monaco and is found in the race team area by 9 in the morning, after having spent time on the simulator in England at 3 in the morning."
"Such dedication. The team has been truly impressed by this level of dedication."
"I'm not suggesting that Ocon should be substituted with Doohan."
"However, I believe Jack is making a positive impression on the team. As they consider their options for the driver lineup in 2025, Jack is certainly taking the appropriate steps to ensure he's a top contender for a spot."
Doohan, serving as Alpine's backup driver, is the offspring of motorcycle icon Mick Doohan. He is in pursuit of securing his inaugural full-time Formula 1 position.
Journalist Diego Mejia from Fox Mexico commented, saying, “Esteban was somewhat overly hopeful. He admitted this on social media shortly after exiting the TV interview area.
"Engaging in that maneuver against any driver signals the start of competition. Echoing Senna's words, if you cease to seize an opening, you've ceased to be a racer."
"At times, drivers might interpret that too directly. However, when it involves your teammate, it's essential to, at the very least, ensure there is space for them."
"In this instance involving Pierre, it was different."
He turned over the front right tire and nearly overturned upon impact.
"[Esteban] accepted responsibility. Let's move forward and not create a big issue over it."
Alpine has faced a tumultuous 2024, highlighted by a significant incident involving their drivers in Monaco.
Ocon currently ranks 17th in the driver rankings, just a spot below Gasly, and his participation in next week's Montreal event is surprisingly not confirmed.
On Friday, Ocon issued an extensive declaration promising to compete in Canada.
