Zarco Surprised by Marquez’s Ducati Learning Curve: Pecco Still Reigns Supreme
Johann Zarco had anticipated Marc Marquez would dominate the field at Ducati
Johann Zarco expressed, "I believed he'd sweep through, outpacing everyone, but it turned out Pecco demonstrated he's still the top performer on the Ducati."
Johann Zarco has acknowledged that it has taken Marc Marquez, a six-time MotoGP world champion, more time than anticipated to adjust to riding the Ducati.
Marquez continues to be a major contender for the championship, trailing behind Jorge Martin and Francesco Bagnaia. Notably, both Martin and Bagnaia are utilizing the GP24 motorcycle, whereas Marquez is competing on the previous year's championship-winning GP23 model.
Marquez, after initially taking some time to adjust to the Ducati, has shown exceptional performance throughout much of the current season.
Yet, it hasn't led to a win, something that left Zarco astonished.
In a conversation with GPOne, Zarco admitted, "Honestly, I anticipated he would be more formidable, but then it became apparent he required some time to adjust.
"I anticipated he would effortlessly outperform his rivals, but instead, Pecco demonstrated that he remains the most skilled at maneuvering the Ducati."
"He achieves it through a very meticulous and exact approach. Observing Marc's necessity to adjust reassures me, as it demonstrates that even the most formidable [rider] must also make adaptations, albeit at a quicker pace than myself.
"This inspires me and helps me recognize that there are aspects to grasp on every bicycle."
Zarco, in an effort to prolong his MotoGP career, switched from Ducati to Honda, experiencing firsthand the superiority of the Desmosedici over the underperforming Honda.
However, this hasn't deterred the French cyclist from aspiring to make a comeback with the Japanese company.
Honda is currently facing challenges in the World Superbike Championship, yet Zarco, who plans to participate in the Suzuka 8 Hours with Honda this year, is determined to continue his career in MotoGP for several more years.
When questioned about the possibility of switching to WorldSBK, Zarco responded, "No, I genuinely enjoy MotoGP. The competition is incredibly intense in MotoGP, and it thrills me to keep evolving as a racer.
"For me, it continues to be 'the category,' and it's the one I identify with."
