Wolff Teases Verstappen with Mercedes’ Performance at Silverstone: A Sneak Peek into F1’s Future Dynamics?
Recent comment from Toto Wolff on pursuing Max Verstappen: "Numerous chances to examine the car"
"I'm not sure. During the race, he [Verstappen] has numerous chances to examine the car."
Toto Wolff humorously remarked that Max Verstappen had "plenty of chances" to observe Mercedes' upgraded Formula 1 vehicle following Lewis Hamilton's victory at the 2024 British Grand Prix.
Mercedes demonstrated further progress at Silverstone, capturing the front row with George Russell achieving his second pole position of the season.
Under the arid circumstances, Mercedes showcased the quickest vehicle, distancing itself from both the McLarens and Verstappen trailing behind.
Hamilton's superb performance, coupled with an impeccable strategy, led the seven-time world champion to secure his first victory since 2021, surpassing Verstappen.
Mercedes' improvement in their race outcomes arrives at a notable moment, especially since they have not yet revealed who will be partnering with Russell for the upcoming season.
Wolff continues to show interest in acquiring Verstappen, despite Verstappen's commitment to staying with Red Bull, especially because they possess the top-performing car in F1.
Following the race at Silverstone, where Crash.net had a presence in the paddock, Wolff was queried on whether the enhanced performance of Mercedes might sway Verstappen's choice to sign with the team.
He responded, "I'm not sure. During the race, Verstappen has numerous chances to examine the car."
Mercedes' comeback to a leading position in Formula 1 might sway their decision to choose a newcomer such as Antonelli for their car, rather than going with Carlos Sainz.
Nonetheless, Wolff dismissed the idea that their improved results would influence their decision regarding the selection of a second driver for 2025.
“He emphasized, “I believe… It doesn’t affect our decision-making process.” He continued, “My stance has always been that the priority is to have a fast car. Once we achieve that, we then focus on fitting the driver in and making it appealing for our primary drivers.
"I believe it's important for us to remain composed, keep progressing through the season, maintain our concentration on the vehicle, and then assess if our choices remain unchanged."
"However, it doesn't mean everything is being turned completely on its head."
