Apologies Exchanged: Martin Brundle and Brian May Clear the Air After British GP Grid Walk Mishap
Martin Brundle extends an apology to Brian May following an uncomfortable incident during the grid walk at the British Grand Prix.
Martin Brundle has extended an apology to the iconic Queen guitarist Brian May after an uncomfortable encounter occurred during the F1 grid walk at the British Grand Prix this past Sunday.
Brundle sought to have a conversation with May, who was in attendance at Silverstone, invited by Mercedes.
As he neared May, Brundle inquired during his grid stroll, "Brian, do you have a moment to talk with Sky?"
May declined, prompting Brundle to comment: “Knowledge isn't required. Glad to have you here at the grid, much appreciated.”
Speaking to the audience: "Our goal isn't to create challenges for him. He admitted to not being sufficiently informed about Formula 1. I appreciate his honesty. He doesn't wish to appear as though he's knowledgeable when he's not. And that's perfectly acceptable."
May responded to the circumstances by publishing a statement on his website.
"Thanks to the generosity of the Mercedes team, I enjoyed a fantastic day at Silverstone, and my grandson experienced some genuinely memorable birthday highlights," observed May.
"Also, I want to extend my apologies to Mr. Brundle. It was never my intention to disregard you. What was witnessed was merely my nervousness about discussing a topic I'm not very knowledgeable about and my eagerness to reach my intended destination."
Not long after, Brundle made an apology via social media platforms.
On his X profile, he posted: "I am the one who owes Sir Brian May an apology, not the other way around, for what happened during Sunday's gridwalk at Silverstone."
"I failed to refer to him as Sir Brian, and it was improper of me to attempt to engage him in conversation twice when he was not in the mood for a live TV discussion. It's important to remember that no one is under any obligation to speak with me on the grid, or anywhere else for that matter."
