Williams Clears the Air: No Exit Clause in Carlos Sainz’s F1 Contract Amid Speculation
Williams dismisses speculation about a supposed 'exit clause' in Carlos Sainz's F1 contract
Williams has dismissed rumors suggesting that there is a unique exit clause in Carlos Sainz's Formula 1 contract.
Williams has dismissed claims that there's a unique exit clause in Carlos Sainz's Formula 1 contract that permits him to join either Mercedes or Red Bull.
After much anticipation, Williams confirmed the acquisition of former Ferrari driver Sainz, securing him on a multi-year contract starting in 2025.
Over the recent months, Sainz deliberated over proposals from both Sauber/Audi and Alpine, eventually deciding on Williams. It was also hinted that he remained undecided, holding out for a potential opening at either Red Bull or Mercedes.
Speculation emerged across various news platforms suggesting that Sainz was seeking a release clause in his agreement with Williams. This clause would allow him the option to move to either Mercedes or Red Bull should an opportunity arise from those teams.
The German outlet F1-Insider reported that the contract for Sainz, valued at "€10 million," contained a clause that might have resulted in him not competing for Williams at all.
However, Williams team leader James Vowles stepped forward to refute these claims.
"Vowles informed the media, including Crash.net on Tuesday, that only a select group of 10 individuals are privy to the contents of the contract."
"I can assure everyone participating in this call, as well as anyone within our organization, especially those in close proximity to me right now, that they are not involved. Those aligned with Carlos are aware, as am I, of the true contents. Therefore, any information you've come across online is purely conjectural, nothing more.
"The information regarding the agreement extending into 2025, 2026, and possibly further did not originate from me; it was Carlos who conveyed it. He was adamant about making it crystal clear to everyone, globally, that he is dedicated and this is his chosen place to be."
Sainz is set to take over from Logan Sargeant, joining Alex Albon to fill out Williams' driver roster for the 2025 season.
"Vowles expressed a strong conviction in their current endeavors, the path they are on, and the reasons behind its anticipated success,” he continued. “This conviction extends to Carlos too – pointing out that if there's anyone who can make a significant impact, it's him.
"I'm not solely concentrating on his speed behind the wheel. I'm also paying attention to his character, which encompasses the behavior of his entourage as well."
"This encompasses both Carlos' manager and Carlos' father. His father shares Junior's focus on performance. He's a remarkable individual, and their collective presence forms a complete package, which is precisely what we require at Williams. I believe the match is impeccable.
"I relayed those precise thoughts to them, from start to finish, throughout our entire adventure."
