Wilco Zeelenberg to Exit Trackhouse Aprilia at End of 2024: Davide Brivio Confirms Departure Amid Team’s Strategic Shift
Davide Brivio has announced that Wilco Zeelenberg will be departing from Trackhouse Aprilia at the conclusion of the 2024 season, as confirmed during the Aragon MotoGP event.
Davide Brivio, the principal of the Trackhouse Aprilia team, announced last weekend that Wilco Zeelenberg will be departing from the team once the 2024 season concludes.
Zeelenberg, who initially joined the Trackhouse team when it started as the Petronas SRT Yamaha team in 2019, will depart from the satellite Aprilia project after its second season with the Noale brand, and the first season under the Trackhouse name.
In an interview with MotoGP.com's pit lane reporter Simon Crafar ahead of the Aragon MotoGP race at MotorLand last Sunday, Brivio, who became part of Trackhouse at the start of 2024, shared that Zeelenberg's exit was a "very difficult" decision to make. He added that this move is part of the American-owned team's efforts to explore "a new direction".
Brivio mentioned that Zeelenberg's exit was a topic of conversation. He stated that they collectively made the decision and praised Wilco Zeelenberg for his contributions.
"Frankly, when I got here, I discovered a team that he has developed over the years. Most of this team will remain the same next year as well, so he deserves significant recognition for what he has accomplished."
"As Trackhouse, we believed that for the future, we needed to explore a new path. It's unfortunate in some ways, but it's also just part of the business."
"It's never easy, and reaching this decision has been extremely challenging."
The future of Zeelenberg remains uncertain at this time. Zeelenberg, who previously won a 250cc Grand Prix, has had a notable career as a team manager. He initially managed the factory Yamaha MotoGP team for riders Jorge Lorenzo and later Maverick Vinales. In 2019, he transitioned to the Petronas SRT team, taking on the role of team manager there.
