VR46 Riders Endure Harrowing Crashes During German MotoGP Practice: Di Giannantonio and Bezzecchi Speak Out
Fabio di Giannantonio: “The impact was significant!” | Bezzecchi: “Gravel entered my helmet”
VR46 team riders endure heavy crashes during the German MotoGP practice session on Friday.
Fabio di Giannantonio immediately clutched his right arm following a high-speed crash during Friday's practice session at the German MotoGP. As he exited the gravel trap while still holding his arm, it appeared his participation in the weekend's events might be in jeopardy.
Luckily, the VR46 racer – whose motorcycle ended up on the airfence after tumbling through the gravel and causing a red flag – was later spotted grinning as he headed to the Medical Centre.
Cleared to race after scans showed no collarbone fractures—despite a possible minor dislocation—di Giannantonio courageously got back on the track and secured a spot in Qualifying 2 by finishing in ninth place.
“I'm feeling better now, but it was quite a blow!” Diggia remarked. “My collarbone hurts, but apart from that, everything else seems fine.”
"At the end of the straightaway, I lost control of the front: perhaps the tire wasn't adequately prepared or I applied the brakes too forcefully. There was a significant impact when I hit the gravel, but a medical examination confirmed I wasn't injured."
“I returned to the track and was pleasantly surprised by my lap time. Although our pace is decent, we still need to improve the electronics in the final sector."
"Currently undergoing physiotherapy and data analysis to prepare for the Sprint."
Fabio Di Giannantonio wasn't the only VR46 team rider to suffer injuries, as his teammate Marco Bezzecchi also crashed at the notorious Turn 11, along with Marc Marquez and Enea Bastianini.
Bezzecchi, sporting a bloodied face, came back to finish 26 laps, ultimately placing 19th on the leaderboard.
"Today was one of the toughest days of the season: I felt okay this morning, but the gap widened in the afternoon," remarked Bezzecchi, who started the day by finishing 12th in FP1.
"I was in an accident, suffered a heavy blow, gravel entered my helmet, and I injured my face."
“The familiar issues resurfaced again; I found it difficult to control the throttle initially, the bike wouldn't steer properly, and I kept losing speed, often drifting off the racing line. Today just wasn't my day, but I aim to improve tomorrow. We won't give up.”
