VR46 Eyes Factory-Spec Ducati for 2025 Amid Pramac’s Shift to Yamaha: A MotoGP Power Play
VR46 aims for factory-level Ducati previously held by Pramac in 2025
As Pramac transitions to Yamaha, VR46 is looking to obtain the third factory Ducati for the 2025 MotoGP season.
Pramac's transition from Ducati to Yamaha in next season's MotoGP also implies that its allocation of top-tier Desmosedici motorcycles will be available for either the VR46 or Gresini teams.
Regrettably, Ducati Corse's general manager Gigi Dall’Igna has disclosed that the departure of Pramac will lead to a reduction in the number of factory-spec motorcycles.
"The aim is to possess three official bikes along with three from last year," Dall’Igna informed Sky Italia.
To put it differently, just one of Ducati's four satellite riders for the next season will be riding alongside Francesco Bagnaia and Marc Marquez on 2025 factory-spec bikes.
The VR46 team, after rejecting Yamaha's proposal in favor of forming a stronger partnership with Ducati, is now focused on obtaining the GP25.
"Our goal is clear and that’s what we are striving towards," a source from the VR46 team informed Crash.net.
VR46 had been looking for factory bikes for Marco Bezzecchi, but the young Italian racer has now secured a contract to join Aprilia's factory team in 2025.
Fellow racer Fabio di Giannantonio has become Marc Marquez’s main competitor on the GP23. However, there are speculations that he might be targeted by the upcoming Pramac Yamaha factory team, which will feature factory M1 bikes.
Could factory GP25s be sufficient to retain the Qatar 2023 champion with VR46 after Ducati loses other race winners like Martin, Enea Bastianini, and Bezzecchi?
Di Giannantonio achieved his highest finish of the season with a fourth place at Assen last Sunday, benefiting from penalties given to Marquez and Maverick Vinales. His current standing of eighth in the world championship suggests that Diggia is on track for his best MotoGP season yet.
"We had an amazing weekend in Assen," di Giannantonio mentioned as he looked forward to the upcoming race in Germany this weekend.
"We're performing excellently and I'm very pleased with our progress. We're riding a strong wave of success. With two races in the next two weeks, it's crucial to maintain our momentum and aim for another outstanding performance to solidify our capabilities."
However, VR46 may have to secure a spot for current Pramac racer Franco Morbidelli, and Ducati has to accommodate Fermin Aldeguer.
Gresini Racing has only one spot open to replace Marc Marquez, as Alex has already extended his contract for an additional two years.
