Victory in Aragon MotoGP Not Enough to Revive Marc Marquez’s Championship Hopes
Marc Marquez’s win at the Aragon MotoGP isn’t enough to keep him in the running for the championship title.
Eight-time World Champion Marc Marquez won the Aragon MotoGP, cutting his championship points gap to 70. However, he believes he's still not close enough to be seen as a title contender.
Besides being 70 points behind Jorge Martin, Marquez trails Francesco Bagnaia by 47 points. Bagnaia, with seven Grand Prix wins and three Sprint race victories, is the leading rider of 2024.
During the post-race press conference in Aragon, Marquez acknowledged their position when questioned about their chances for the championship. "No, we are far," he admitted. "We keep losing more and more points. We are too far behind."
“It’s not just one competitor; there are actually two who are more consistent than we are.
"A single weekend won't alter our lives. It can certainly benefit us, but it won't be transformative. We're too far behind to contend for the championship this year."
"However, our aim should be to secure a spot in the top three. That's an achievable objective. There are still many points up for grabs and a lot can happen, especially considering the unpredictable weather conditions in Asia, with storms and rain being quite common."
"We continue to have fun, which is what matters most to me, and we'll strive to compete with the best."
Highlighting the importance of maintaining consistency to compete for the championship, Marquez noted the atypical circumstances of the Aragon round.
"This weekend has been incredible, and the atmosphere has been fantastic," he commented. "However, we must remain realistic as the conditions were quite unique. Personally, I believe the Red Bull Ring Grand Prix was more significant for me because I felt great and was performing at a level very close to the top competitors."
"The significance of this win is immense, and our next goal is to achieve consistency. We must learn and adapt during the races, though I anticipate there will be weekends where we face more challenges than usual. Consistency will be crucial moving forward."
Marquez highlighted Enea Bastianini's performance, noting that although Bastianini was considered a significant contender for the championship following his two wins at the British Grand Prix, he finished only fifth in Aragon after starting from 14th place in qualifying.
Marquez stated that while they aim to replicate their performance in the future and can have speed on certain weekends—mentioning Enea Bastianini's quick pace at Silverstone—his primary focus is on achieving consistency, which he believes is the hardest aspect to master.
Jorge Martin, who is currently ahead in the championship by 23 points following the race in Aragon, partially concurred with Marquez's views.
"The championship leader stated that Marc is currently not close in the standings, but he could become a contender for the title if he begins to win every race weekend."
"Two races back, Enea Bastianini re-entered the championship contention, then fell out of it, and now it's Marc who’s showing strength. After his performance in Austria and here, he's undoubtedly one of the top riders capable of competing for the title."
