Verstappen Equals Senna’s Record with Emotionally Charged Pole at Imola
Max Verstappen matched Ayrton Senna's F1 achievement by securing his eighth straight pole position at Imola.
Max Verstappen has matched Ayrton Senna's achievement of securing the highest number of consecutive Formula 1 pole positions during the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
The driver from Red Bull secured his eighth straight pole position – marking his seventh in the ongoing 2024 season – at Imola, equaling the record previously set by the legendary Senna.
Verstappen has been securing pole positions consecutively since the final race of last season in Abu Dhabi.
The thrice-crowned global victor is poised to set a new record in Monaco the following weekend.
Verstappen was pushed to his limits to achieve a pole position that matched the record, closely challenged by McLaren's duo, Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris.
Ultimately, Verstappen narrowly beat Piastri by a mere 0.074 seconds, with Norris trailing closely behind by 0.091 seconds.
"The Dutch driver expressed that it was not only an excellent beginning to the year but also a remarkable achievement," he commented on his recent success in Formula 1.
"Three decades have passed since his demise at this circuit. Naturally, securing the pole position here brings me great satisfaction, and in a manner, it serves as a fitting tribute to him."
"He was an outstanding driver in Formula 1, particularly impressive during the qualifying rounds too. It's a fantastic day for myself and a fantastic day for our team. So, I'm extremely pleased."
Senna tragically lost his life in an accident at the 1994 San Marino Grand Prix in Imola.
Regarding his turnaround from the challenges he faced in Friday's practice, Verstappen commented, "It's been a tough weekend up to this point, including this morning. So, I'm absolutely thrilled to secure the pole position here. It was beyond my expectations."
We implemented a few last-minute adjustments prior to the qualifying round. These modifications appeared to enhance the overall performance, allowing me to exert more effort.
"This circuit is astounding; during a qualifying round, pushing the boundaries near the gravel, I skimmed the gravel on the final turn – indeed, I'm still buzzing, the adrenaline is coursing through me, incredibly intense."
