Fernando Alonso’s Imola Qualifying Woes: A Rare Q1 Exit Explained Amid Aston Martin’s Battle Against Time
Fernando Alonso sheds light on unexpected Imola qualifying disappointment following an uncommon exit in Q1
Fernando Alonso unexpectedly bowed out early during the qualifying round for the Emilia Romagna Grand Prix.
Fernando Alonso disclosed that an unrecognized problem led him to enter the pit lane, resulting in his elimination during Q1.
Alonso was forced out of the third free practice session due to a crash, leaving him at a disadvantage as he headed into the qualifying
Aston Martin successfully fixed their car in time for the qualifying session, while Alonso faced ongoing difficulties, experiencing another incident off the track.
Reflecting on the qualifying round, Alonso expressed: The team performed exceptionally today. It was remarkable to see, in the hours leading up to the qualifying, how both teams, Car 18 and Car 14, dedicated themselves fully to getting my car ready for the qualifying round. We succeeded in doing that. So, a huge thanks to everyone involved.
Regrettably, it was challenging to predict but we ensured the vehicle was fueled for the entire session, and then we executed several pit stops to allow for additional practice laps. Impressively, I recorded the fastest lap during the first qualifying attempt, and it's worth noting that the car was quite fueled up at that point in the session.
"During the final try, with the car being lighter, we were forced to halt due to an unforeseen issue that necessitated a pit stop in our last effort. Overall, it was just one of those days where nothing goes your way. The accident in Free Practice 3 and during the qualifying session made it a challenging day."
Alonso is set to start Sunday's race from the 19th position on the grid at a circuit known for its challenging overtaking conditions.
The double world champion considers Imola to be the second hardest circuit for passing maneuvers, only surpassed by Monaco, indicating a challenging race ahead on Sunday.
"Alonso shared, "I was uncertain, so I inquired. They instructed me to pit, and I agreed, thinking one lap would suffice to handle it. They confirmed, urging me to pit. After halting, I questioned the nature of the issue, to which they admitted it was yet undetermined, but pitting was necessary."
"Let's examine the situation and consider our options for tomorrow. In my view, it's an extremely challenging competition, especially starting from the last position. In terms of overtaking difficulty, Imola ranks as the second toughest circuit, right after Monaco. Just for comparison, overtaking in Singapore is simpler than in Imola."
"Thus, it appears challenging, yet there's hope we'll gain insights. We experience ups and downs; today was a down, and it's crucial we persist."
