Tyre Pressure Penalties Shake Up German MotoGP Results: Marini Gains First Honda Point
Luca Marini earns his initial Honda point following penalties for insufficient tyre pressure
In the German MotoGP, three competitors were penalized for not maintaining the required front tyre pressure.
Augusto Fernandez (14th), Johann Zarco (17th), and Stefan Bradl (18th) received penalties of 16 seconds added to their race times for not maintaining the required minimum tyre pressure during Sunday's German MotoGP.
Considering their final standings, the primary consequence is that Fernandez's relegation results in the loss of his two points.
In a significant milestone, Luca Marini has earned his inaugural world championship point as a member of the Repsol Honda team by finishing in 15th place.
The Italian was edged out for the 15th position by a mere 0.037 seconds by LCR Honda's Takaaki Nakagami at the finish line, allowing Nakagami to secure an additional point for finishing in 14th place.
Updated regulations for tyre pressure in 2024 stipulate that competitors are required to maintain a minimum pressure of 1.8 bar in the front tyres, down from 1.88 bar, for at least 60% of a Grand Prix race distance, an increase from the previous 50%, or for 30% of a Sprint event.
If a participant does not reach the required minimum during a Grand Prix, they will face a 16-second time penalty added after the race concludes. For a Sprint or shorter race, the penalty will be reduced to 8 seconds.
