Triumph and Turmoil: Lewis Hamilton’s Emotional Journey from 2021 F1 Heartbreak to Silverstone Victory
Lewis Hamilton discusses the mental health difficulties he encountered following his contentious loss of the 2021 F1 championship.
Lewis Hamilton has openly discussed the mental health challenges he faced while attempting to recover from the contentious defeat in the 2021 F1 championship.
The seven-time world champion secured his first Formula 1 win in nearly three years during Sunday's British Grand Prix. This marks his first victory since he narrowly missed achieving a record eighth world title to Max Verstappen in a controversial conclusion to the 2021 season in Abu Dhabi.
The Mercedes team has found it hard to stay competitive since new regulations were implemented in 2022. Although George Russell, Hamilton's teammate, has managed to secure two victories during this period, Hamilton had not been able to increase his 103 career wins until a heartfelt victory at a thrilling wet-dry race at Silverstone, his home track.
When questioned about whether his unprecedented ninth victory at the British Grand Prix was the last element needed for him to put the 2021 controversy behind him, Hamilton responded to the press, including Crash.net, by stating: “Only time will reveal that. What I can assure you is that I’m not quitting.
"I believe I'm making the correct choices regarding my life, my preparation methods, and my time management. For instance, the decision I've made for next year, my ongoing dedication to this team, the affection I continue to hold for this team, and the passion I still have for my work."
"I am absolutely passionate about this job. Nothing will ever compare to it, and I feel extremely thankful to be part of this group of 20 drivers in this amazing sport, especially during such an impactful period."
“When I returned in 2022, I believed I had moved past it, but I soon realized I hadn't. It's definitely taken a considerable amount of time to recover from those emotions. It's a common experience for anyone who has gone through something similar. I've been focusing on self-improvement and striving to achieve inner peace one day at a time.”
Hamilton disclosed that he has encountered numerous difficult moments with his mental health throughout the 945 days he waited to win again.
“The sensation is distinct from past races, especially those where you compete consecutively or experience multiple victories in a season,” Hamilton stated.
"Considering the difficulties we've faced as a team and the personal challenges I've encountered, it's been a continuous effort for all of us to rise each day and give our utmost."
"There are numerous occasions when it seems like your best effort falls short, leading to feelings of disappointment. In today's world, mental health is a critical concern, and to be honest, I've gone through those struggles myself."
"There were definitely times when I thought that this was the end, that it would never happen again. So to experience this feeling as I crossed the finish line, I think honestly, I've never cried after winning before. It just happened. It's an incredibly wonderful feeling. I'm extremely thankful for it."
