Guenther Steiner Warns Christian Horner: Red Bull Future at Risk Amid Performance Decline
Guenther Steiner warns Christian Horner that his position might be at risk.
"Not winning can make you susceptible to losing your job."
Christian Horner has been cautioned by Guenther Steiner that his position at Red Bull will be at risk if performance does not get better.
Steiner, who previously worked for Red Bull and is more famously recognized as the ex-team principal of Haas, has observed Horner's challenges this year from a position outside the Formula 1 paddock.
Horner underwent an inquiry regarding his conduct, which cleared him of any wrongdoing, but his performance on the track subsequently started to decline.
Steiner emphasizes that his continued role with the team will be evaluated if he is unable to stabilize the situation.
“Definitely. When you’re successful, any action you take is acceptable,” Steiner mentioned on the Red Flags podcast.
"When victories cease, your susceptibility increases."
"Your protective vest is becoming less effective over time."
"If the gunfire continues, eventually it becomes challenging to protect oneself."
McLaren has overtaken Red Bull in the constructors' championship standings and now looks poised to secure the title.
Max Verstappen continues to lead the drivers' standings by 52 points ahead of the on-form Lando Norris.
Speculation suggests Verstappen might move to Mercedes, but he is expected to stay with Red Bull next year as the 2025 F1 driver roster is nearly complete.
Nevertheless, there are ongoing discussions about what lies ahead for him starting in 2026.
Despite his contract with Red Bull running through 2028, sources suggest that Mercedes and Aston Martin are monitoring his situation closely.
Steiner stated, "I envision him joining Mercedes, although he has other choices available."
"I envision him joining Mercedes in 2026."
Toto Wolff has openly expressed his respect for Verstappen, but he maintains that his 2025 team, which includes George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, is set for the foreseeable future.
However, Wolff and Horner have clashed regarding remarks about Russell's prospects.
Horner suggested that Red Bull might consider Russell in the future.
"Definitely, there's a lot of back-and-forth happening," Steiner responded. "But every rumor has some truth to it."
"Christian will require an excellent driver if Max departs. Certainly, George is available."
