Title: “Jorge Martin Weighs In on Bagnaia-Marquez Aragon MotoGP Collision Amidst Championship Battle
Jorge Martin has shared his thoughts on the collision between his championship competitor Pecco Bagnaia and Alex Marquez during the Aragon MotoGP.
Jorge Martin’s chances at the championship improved at the Aragon Grand Prix last weekend when he maintained his remarkable consistency, while Francesco Bagnaia experienced a crash.
Martin entered Aragon with a five-point deficit to Bagnaia in the World Championship standings, following the Italian's wins in both the Sprint and Grand Prix races in Austria.
However, Bagnaia had a disappointing weekend in terms of points, which coincided with Martin securing second place in both races over the weekend. Martin has consistently finished in second place in all six races since the summer break.
Bagnaia's eventful weekend culminated in a late-race clash with Alex Marquez. Despite a disappointing start, Bagnaia managed to work his way up through the pack and caught up to Marquez's rear tire with seven laps remaining.
During the 18th lap, Marquez went off course at turn 12. Bagnaia saw an opportunity and attempted to capitalize on it, but the two riders collided and crashed at turn 13.
In the post-race press conference, Martin shared his perspective on the incident, though he was evidently hesitant to strongly support either side.
"It's challenging," Martin remarked. "You ought to inquire with Pecco [Bagnaia] and Alex [Marquez]."
“Absolutely, it's hard to see clearly because there was a significant amount of dust in that area. I believe Alex couldn’t lean further, similar to what happened to Joe Roberts in Moto2—Roberts had an accident on the final lap while competing against his American Racing teammate Marcos Ramirez—and ultimately, there was a collision.
"I really hope they’re alright since it looked like they were near the bikes after the crash. I’m wishing they’re good to go for the next race."
Following the event, Bagnaia visited the medical facility where scans revealed no fractures. However, the Italian rider mentioned experiencing discomfort in his neck and left shoulder.
This weekend, the Misano World Circuit Marco Simoncelli will host the upcoming MotoGP World Championship event, the San Marino Grand Prix. In 2023, Bagnaia participated in this race despite a leg injury sustained from a crash during the Catalan Grand Prix. This year, he will again have just one week to recover from the Aragon race to prepare for Misano.
Despite Bagnaia's two previous victories at Misano in the MotoGP category, it was Martin who triumphed in both 2023 races. This year, the Spanish rider heads into his competitor's home event with a 23-point lead in the championship standings.
