Strategic Maneuvers at the Dutch MotoGP: Marc Marquez’s Controversial Bid to Manage Tyre Pressure
Why did Marc Marquez allow Fabio di Giannantonio to overtake him during the Dutch MotoGP race?
"It was evident that neither Di Giannantonio nor Marquez was keen on being at the forefront of the group."
Marc Marquez caught attention by apparently signaling Fabio di Giannantonio to pass him during the Dutch MotoGP race.
On the eighth lap at Assen, it seemed that the Gresini team's rider gave up their spot while competing for a top-three finish.
Gresini's Marquez finished in fourth place, followed closely by VR46's Di Giannantonio in fifth, in the grand prix that was taken by Ducati's official racer, Pecco Bagnaia.
Marquez subsequently received a 16-second penalty for violating tyre pressure regulations, causing him to fall from fourth place to 10th.
Sylvain Guintoli of TNT Sports is of the opinion that Marquez's gesture to let Di Giannantonio overtake was a strategy to dodge a penalty related to tyre pressure, though it proved to be unsuccessful.
"Most probably. That's how it appears to me," he remarked.
"For the first time, we've witnessed a rider clearly attempting to position themselves behind another participant."
"To put it succinctly: competitors and their squads are required to adhere to a minimum threshold for front tyre pressure. It's mandatory that it not fall below 1.8 bars for 40% of the competition's duration."
Alerts appear on the dashboard indicating if the required number of laps above the specified threshold hasn't been met.
To increase the pressure in the front tire, one must be trailing behind someone.
"That individual will rob you of the fresh air, leaving you with the heated emissions from his motorcycle."
"Consequently, the temperature and pressure within the front tire will increase."
We observed Di Giannantonio and Marquez clearly showing reluctance to take the lead in the group.
This implies that the problem was likely…
"If that was their course of action, it implies they were truly pushing their boundaries."
Michael Laverty mentioned regarding Marquez: "He aimed to keep pace with the GP24 Ducatis."
"He had to think outside the box to maintain his tire within that specific distance as the space widened."
Marquez currently trails the leader of the championship, Jorge Martin, by 51 points, following Martin's second-place finish behind Bagnaia at the Dutch MotoGP.
