Shift in Gears: Toyota Postpones U.S. Electric Vehicle Production to 2026 Amidst Design Changes and Market Dynamics

It appears Toyota has pushed back the launch of its electric vehicles manufactured in the United States to 2026, which is one year later than originally scheduled.

On Tuesday, according to Nikkei, the commencement of manufacturing for a novel electric SUV featuring three rows of seating at a Kentucky facility is scheduled for 2026.

In 2023, Toyota revealed plans to begin manufacturing their electric SUV with seating for three rows by the year 2025.

Nikkei reports that the slowdown in the manufacturing process is due to a decrease in electric vehicle purchases.

It's been reported that the facility in Kentucky is set to receive an infusion of $1.3 billion to gear up for the manufacturing of electric vehicles.

According to Nikkei, changes made by Toyota to the design of the vehicle contributed to the delay in the commencement of its production.

According to Nikkei, the strategy to manufacture Lexus electric SUVs in the United States has been scrapped. Production of these vehicles will now take place in Japan, with the finished products being exported to the U.S. market.

In an announcement made in 2023, Toyota revealed plans to enhance its range of electric vehicles by introducing 10 new models. This expansion will include a variety of EVs from high-end options to smaller cars and even commercial vehicles, with a primary focus on the markets in the United States and China, as stated by the car manufacturer.

Toyota planned to expand their electric vehicle range to hit their goal of selling 1.5 million battery-powered cars by 2026, which they considered a foundational sales figure. However, in 2021, Toyota projected that a vast majority, or 85%, of their vehicles sold in the U.S. by 2030 would continue to have exhaust systems.

According to Nikkei, Toyota has revised its electric vehicle sales goal downward to 1 million units, which equates to roughly 10% of its present yearly sales figures.

Scott Vazin, a representative for Toyota, informed Reuters that the car manufacturer intends to launch between five and seven electric vehicles in the American market within the coming two years.
