Ford Electrifies Home Charging: Free Chargers and Installation for EV Buyers
Ford is providing complimentary home chargers and installation services to customers purchasing electric vehicles, with the goal of simplifying the process for them.
On the first day of the week, the head of Ford, Jim Farley, shared a message on the professional networking site LinkedIn announcing that the company will offer a complimentary home charging unit and cover the cost of setting it up for customers who purchase or lease a Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, or E-Transit.
Farley mentioned that the free Level 2 domestic charging unit would be provided alongside the vehicle or sent to customers when they request it. Ford will coordinate the installation of the charger by a certified technician, free of cost to the customers.
Ford has indicated that the complimentary charging station setup should be viewed as a "typical installation." This implies that it is intended for a private residence equipped with its own electrical meter, a circuit capable of handling up to 60 amps, and electrical cabling that doesn’t exceed 80 feet in length.
Farley recently embarked on extensive journeys through the Western United States and Europe in electric vehicles. He concluded that what customers truly desire is ease of use, assurance, and professional support.
Farley has expressed that understanding home charging is key to embracing electric vehicles in the U.S., with close to 90% of potential buyers indicating they would be more inclined to purchase an EV if home charging was an option. The details surrounding the location, installation, and expense of home charging stations are perplexing for customers, the executive pointed out. Farley believes this new incentive simplifies the process of setting up home charging.
Ford took the pioneering step among car manufacturers, apart from Tesla, to tackle the challenge of widespread charging access for electric vehicles. They achieved this through a collaboration with Tesla. In 2023, Jim Farley of Ford and Tesla's Elon Musk made a public statement that Tesla's Supercharging stations would become accessible to Ford vehicles. Furthermore, Farley made a pledge that future electric vehicles from Ford would incorporate Tesla's North American Charging Standard (NACS) ports.
In 2024, Ford initiated complimentary distribution of Combined Charging System (CCS) to North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapters for its F-150 Lightning and Mustang Mach-E customers, coinciding with Tesla granting access to its Supercharger stations to owners of Ford electric vehicles.
Update – Additional details have been provided to define what Ford deems as a typical installation process.
