Revel Powers Up Manhattan’s First 24/7 EV Fast-Charging Hub Targeting Uber Drivers and Rideshare Fleet Electrification
Revel launches NYC's inaugural round-the-clock EV rapid-charging hub targeting Uber drivers
Situated on Pier 36 within the Lower East Side area of Manhattan in New York, the location is equipped with ten 320-kilowatt DC rapid-charging stations provided by the Finnish firm Kempower, as stated in an announcement from Revel. With this addition, Revel now operates a total of 64 rapid-charging points across New York City. The facility is conveniently located just off the FDR Drive, which is the primary thoroughfare bordering Manhattan's eastern edge.
Revel asserts that their 320-kilowatt charging stations will provide the quickest charging option in New York City. However, earlier this year, Gravity launched a facility in Manhattan, situated west of Revel's site, which allegedly delivers charging capabilities of up to 500 kilowatts.

The site at Gravity might experience a variety of uses; however, the rapid-charging station by Revel at Pier 36 is expected to be predominantly utilized by drivers providing ride-hailing services, including those from Revel and Uber. Revel and Uber initiated a collaboration earlier in the year, offering Uber drivers a 25% reduction in charging costs at Revel's stations. In return, Uber assures a certain level of activity at Revel's current and upcoming charging locations.
Over the past five years, Revel's business focus has changed multiple times. Initially starting with electric mopeds, the company transitioned to offering rideshare services and has recently pivoted to providing charging services. Revel's current goal is to grow its charging stations in New York City to a total of 300 by the year 2025. Plans include establishing a large charging hub with 60 charging ports in Queens and another significant station with 48 ports at LaGuardia Airport, which is also situated in Queens.
"Introducing the Revel carpool
Revel reports a ten-time surge in the use of its charging stations over the past year, attributed to New York City's Green Rides program that seeks to convert the entire city's rideshare vehicles to electric by the year 2030. Similarly, Uber has set a goal to offer exclusively electric rides across its global operations by the same deadline.
Revel recently launched a rapid charging station, hot on the heels of news that New York's biggest car park firm intends to install Level 2 chargers at 5,000 of its spaces. Such chargers, however, are expected to be more beneficial for the personal vehicles of citizens rather than for those used in ridesharing services.
In the 1890s, New York City was already using electric-powered taxis. However, despite the city's efforts to modernize cabs in the past decade, the transition to electric vehicles has been slow. The introduction of more rapid charging stations could be the key to turning the city's iconic yellow taxi fleet more eco-friendly.
