Sergio Perez Nears Red Bull Renewal, Leaving Carlos Sainz to Weigh Limited Options for 2025 F1 Season
Sergio Perez is nearing a fresh agreement with Red Bull, a setback for Carlos Sainz
It's rumored that Sergio Perez is on the verge of finalizing a renewed contract with Red Bull, despite his recent dip in performance.
Sources indicate that Sergio Perez is nearing a deal to extend his contract with Red Bull, ensuring his position on the team for the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Despite facing challenges in the recent races at Emilia Romagna and Monaco, according to Motorsport, the racer from Mexico is still considered the top choice to team up with the current world champion Max Verstappen.
Perez faced a setback in Q2 at Imola, ending up in eighth place in the grand prix following a detour through the gravel. His challenges persisted in Monaco, where a significantly underwhelming 18th place in the qualifiers was followed by an early exit from the race due to a collision with Kevin Magnussen on the opening lap.
Red Bull's team leader, Christian Horner, has consistently highlighted Perez's impressive early season performance, describing his latest races as merely a temporary setback.
"Horner mentioned, "It's been a tough weekend for him. Clearly, we must ensure that both our cars are in a position to score points since we can't overlook the challenge posed by Ferrari and McLaren in both championships.
"During Checo's initial six races, he showed remarkable strength, securing a spot on the front row for the start and achieving second and third place finishes, along with scoring impressively. The goal now is to regain that level of confidence and avoid any decrease in performance."
Horner emphasized that Perez's recent difficulties would not affect when a decision is made for the upcoming season.
"Actually, no," Horner responded to the inquiry. "I believe it's largely a matter of timing for us. We'll come to a decision when the time is right."
In the meantime, Helmut Marko, a motorsport consultant for Red Bull, suggested that the team might conclude an agreement by the time of the Spanish Grand Prix in June.
"He mentioned to Motorsport.com, 'I believe by the time we reach Barcelona, things should be much clearer.' He added, 'By that point, we should definitely have a solid understanding ourselves.'"
Motorsport has conveyed that Red Bull has ruled out the possibility of moving Yuai-allcreator.com">ki Tsunoda up from their affiliate team, RB, and has informed Carlos Sainz that he is not being considered for a spot next to Verstappen in the 2025 lineup.
Considering Sainz is not expected to take over from Lewis Hamilton at Mercedes, it appears that Sauber and Williams emerge as the obvious choices for the Spanish driver.
