Sauber has strengthened their Formula 1 technical team with a new addition in preparation for Audi's entry.
Sauber has strengthened their Formula 1 technical team by appointing Stefano Sordo as the new performance director.
Sordo has been appointed to the newly established position of performance director as Sauber prepares for Audi's entry in 2026.
The Italian will answer directly to Technical Director James Key and is the newest significant addition to Audi's team.
Sordo brings with him two decades of high-level experience in motorsport.
He worked for several years as a race engineer with Arrows, Jaguar, and Red Bull, eventually taking on the role of aero performance leader in 2007.
Sordo was elevated to the role of head of aero performance in 2014 and then transitioned to McLaren in 2016.
He dedicated six years to Woking before transitioning to the United States, where he joined RLL Racing. There, he took on the role of technical director and participated in both IndyCar and ISMA competitions.
In a recent statement regarding the news, Sauber's CEO, Andreas Seidl, remarked, "Naming Stefano to his new position marks a significant milestone in the evolution of our technical department’s organization."
"Stefano understands the essentials of a successful team, offers extensive experience, and due to his diverse past roles, he is exceptionally qualified to evaluate our technical operations' strengths and weaknesses, and determine necessary improvements."
The technical team in Hinwil is robust, and bringing Stefano on board will enable us to leverage these talents and translate them into better performance. This is essential as we prepare for the Audi F1 works team to make its debut.
Sordo expressed his excitement about becoming a part of the Stake F1 Team KICK Sauber, emphasizing that his new position will directly influence the team's existing capabilities and assist in achieving even greater success.
"The team is at a significant turning point, as the Audi collaboration is about to begin, and I am eager to face the upcoming challenges. I am enthusiastic about the future: the goals the team has established are ambitious, but I sense a strong confidence from everyone involved in this organisation."
