Ricciardo Apologizes for Hulkenberg Clash Amid Penalty-Plagued Italian GP; Tsunoda’s Race Ends in Frustration
Daniel Ricciardo addresses clash with Nico Hulkenberg, saying he believed there was enough room and has since apologized.
Ricciardo comments on the incident involving Haas during the Italian Grand Prix in Formula 1.
Daniel Ricciardo mentioned that he extended an apology to Nico Hulkenberg after the two drivers collided on the first lap of the Formula 1 Italian Grand Prix.
Red Bull driver Ricciardo and Hulkenberg were competing in the middle of the field during the first lap of Sunday’s race at Monza when they collided at Turn 8.
Ricciardo mentioned that he believed he had enough room, but then experienced a collision – resulting in Hulkenberg’s Haas being pushed onto the dirt and losing a position to his teammate, Kevin Magnussen.
The Australian driver initially received a five-second penalty for the incident. However, he was subsequently handed a 10-second penalty because one of his mechanics made contact with his car during the pit stop while he was serving the first penalty.
Ricciardo finished a challenging race at home in 13th place for the Red Bull team.
"In the end, we just didn't have the speed today, even disregarding the penalties," he remarked.
"We gave it our best shot, and I was having a great time battling side-by-side in the opening stages, but I ended up colliding with Nico at Turn 8."
“After the race, I had a conversation with him. I believed there was enough space, but I felt the impact, so I realized I hadn't left enough room. I apologized for that.”
"It's challenging because you put in a lot of effort, but even the tiniest differences can have a big impact."
"The vehicle performed adequately afterward, and we exerted maximum effort with the resources available. I've been striving to extract peak performance from the car since Friday afternoon until today."
"I’m feeling much improved this weekend, and we came close to earning some points."
Tsunoda Expresses Disappointment
The Italian Grand Prix for Red Bull Racing was heavily influenced by Nico Hulkenberg's actions, as stated by team member Laurent Mekies. An incident involving the Haas driver and Yuki Tsunoda led to the Japanese driver's race coming to an early conclusion.
"I’m quite annoyed; it's unfortunate that my race ended just a few laps in because of a collision with Nico," Tsunoda expressed.
"I attempted to give him plenty of room, but it appeared he froze up, lost control, and collided with me."
“Regrettably, we had to withdraw the car from the race due to floor damage.
"I noticed it immediately and attempted to keep going, but the vehicle was swerving and I just couldn't control it."
"Up next are Baku and Singapore, where our vehicle is expected to excel. We're optimistic about having successful weekends at both locations."
Mekies is frustrated about the Tsunoda incident because it caused him to lose important track time with the updated RB car that was brought to Monza.
"Regarding today's race, Hulkenberg seemed to control the pace. Daniel received a five-second penalty for pushing him off the track. Subsequently, Nico collided with Yuki, which resulted in us having to retire the car," he explained.
"The most disappointing part about Yuki retiring is that we missed out on 40 laps that could have helped us better comprehend the updates we implemented at this event."
“Daniel was given an additional 10-second penalty because we didn't properly implement the initial one.
"We need to re-evaluate our processes in this situation and take lessons from the error made today. While such incidents occur, our pit crew's performance has mostly been outstanding this season."
