Ricciardo and Quartararo: A Tale of Friendship and Resilience Across MotoGP and F1
Daniel Ricciardo on Fabio Quartararo: "They're on another level. Their mindset, their war wounds…"
Daniel Ricciardo contends that MotoGP racers are "an entirely distinct class" following his discovery of Fabio Quartararo's ability to surmount physical injuries.
In September, Formula 1 racer Ricciardo caught up with his buddy, Yamaha MotoGP competitor Quartararo, following an operation to mend his fractured hand.
Quartararo's response? He seized Ricciardo's hand and twisted it, demonstrating that the injury could be overcome.
Quartararo revealed to Fox Sports Australia, "He underwent an operation and only fractured his metacarpal, yet he behaved as if his shoulder was completely immobilized. I inquired, 'what's the extent of your injury?'"
"I'm considering 'perhaps keep your hand still, but at least shift your arm!'"
"I advised him to adjust his hand position to speed up his return, and ended up having to physically guide it into place. He found it so amusing that he couldn't stop laughing!"
Ricciardo mentioned, "He really hassled me that evening for my inability to use my hand during dinner, insisting that I should still be fit to compete in the race the following weekend."
"I believe he wasn't entirely aware of the severity of the fracture, yet his reaction made me feel utterly worthless…
"He believes I was positioning my hand as if my whole arm was injured… he was clearly mocking me."
Later, he shared with me that he had previously extracted a screw from his flesh, a remnant of a surgical procedure he underwent, simply yanking it out from the end of his finger…
"Truly, those who ride motorcycles stand apart. Their mindset, their marks of experience… they belong to a unique class compared to the rest of us."
Quartararo mentioned, "Indeed, when it comes to motorcycles, we're more accustomed to fractures in the fingers or similar injuries.
"For a whole month, he acted like a complete infant, terrified to utilize it."
"Not every Formula One racer lacks toughness, but in my opinion, he does!"
Ricciardo and Quartararo formed a bond in 2019.
In his debut season, Quartararo made history as the youngest competitor to secure the pole position at Jerez. Unfortunately, his Yamaha malfunctioned, shattering his aspirations for a win.
Ricciardo extended his condolences.
Quartararo recalled, "Daniel sent me a message encouraging me to 'keep your head up, you were incredibly quick'".
"I thought, 'wow, this is a significant milestone in my career'."
In the week leading up to the F1 Spanish Grand Prix, Quartararo made a visit to his recent friend, and they have maintained contact continuously since then.
