Remy Gardner’s Gritty Return to MotoGP: Surpassing Two Hondas and Taking a Tumble
Remy Gardner: “I had a minor injury, but I'm fine”
Remy Gardner, back in MotoGP, managed to stay ahead of two Honda bikes while filling in for Monster Yamaha, though he did suffer a small injury.
Remy Gardner, who hadn't ridden a MotoGP bike since 2022, experienced his debut on a Yamaha M1, securing the 20th quickest lap time in Friday's practice session for the German Grand Prix.
This placed him in front of Stefan Bradl and Joan Mir, who were riding Hondas, and he was just one second behind his teammate, Fabio Quartararo, who was in 14th position.
The day was eventful for the Australian rider, who achieved his first WorldSBK podium finishes with GYTR Yamaha this season, as he was among ten riders who crashed in the afternoon session.
Gardner mentioned that he faced some difficulties in the first practice session while getting used to the Michelins and the motorcycle. He added that prior to the afternoon session, they made some tweaks to his riding by analyzing data and adjusting the electronics, which led to a fairly decent performance.
"The gap of 1.783 seconds isn't too bad considering I only had two hours on the bike. It's not the worst outcome. If I hadn't crashed at the end and managed to complete the lap without any mistakes, we might have achieved a time of around 1 minute and 20.9 seconds, which I believe is respectable."
"In the final lap, I approached Turn 13 with more speed than intended. Caught in the slipstream, I ended up locking the front tire and lost control early while braking. It took me by surprise."
“Regrettably, my pinky finger got trapped under the handlebar for a brief moment, causing me to lose some skin. However, I’ll be fine.
The rider commented that expecting to finish in the points might be overly optimistic for this weekend. He added that engaging in competitive battles with other riders and enjoying the race is ultimately what matters most to him.
Team boss Massimo Meregalli commented, "Remy performed admirably, despite the incident towards the end. Stepping in for a MotoGP rider on such short notice is challenging. Assignments like these carry significant pressure, but he managed it effectively."
"He just joined our team and is also new to riding the M1, yet he managed to achieve impressive lap times on his first day, and we are amazed."
“We are relieved that his accident at the conclusion wasn't more severe, and we are eager to resume our collaboration with him tomorrow to collect as much information as we can.”
During the 2022 MotoGP season, Gardner rode for Tech3 KTM and achieved his highest placement with an 11th and a 15th place finish in Germany.
