Remy Gardner steps in for the injured Alex Rins at the German MotoGP.
This weekend in Germany, Remy Gardner is set to make his comeback to MotoGP, stepping in for the injured Alex Rins on the factory Monster Yamaha team.
After clinching the Moto2 title in 2021, Gardner faced a challenging 2022 season in MotoGP with Tech3 KTM, ultimately placing 23rd in the rankings.
Following the loss of his RC16 seat to Augusto Fernandez, the Australian rider transitioned to WorldSBK with Yamaha.
"To begin with, I wish Alex a speedy recovery and send him my best regards," Gardner expressed.
"I'm thrilled about this opportunity. I want to express my gratitude to Yamaha for giving me the chance to compete this weekend. I intend to make the most of this experience and learn as much as I can."
"This is a fresh motorcycle, and returning to MotoGP for a single race is always a pleasant experience. I'm eager to make the most of this weekend, and I'm very grateful for this chance. A huge thanks to Yamaha once again."
On Monday evening, Rins had surgery on his wrist and ankle after a major highside crash at turn 1 during the Dutch MotoGP in Assen.
"The operation was successful, and I am now on my way home," Rins stated. "Regrettably, I will have to sit out the upcoming Grand Prix, but I aim to return as soon as possible. This setback has only increased our determination to continue our efforts."
Team leader Massimo Meregalli expressed, "First and foremost, the team is relieved that Alex's operation was successful and that his injuries from the highside incident are not more severe. We are all hoping for his quick recovery and look forward to having him back with us soon."
"Moreover, we appreciate Remy Gardner and the GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK team for being able to participate with us at the Sachsenring on such brief notice."
"We believe this weekend will be a fascinating experience for him, and the team is committed to ensuring he feels welcomed and supported as he navigates the steep learning curve."
Earlier this season at Assen, Remy Gardner, the son of 1987 500cc world champion Wayne Gardner, achieved his first podium finish in the WorldSBK series.
The 26-year-old racer currently holds the seventh position in the World Superbike rankings, making him the second-highest R1 rider, trailing behind Andrea Locatelli who is in fifth place.
Gardner, the sole WorldSBK racer for Yamaha who has previously raced in MotoGP, secured 15th place for Tech3 in the 2022 German MotoGP, after clinching a victory in Moto2 at Sachsenring in 2021.
Yamaha's MotoGP test rider, Cal Crutchlow, had to cancel his planned wild-card entry at Mugello last month because of 'complications' arising from a 'procedure' intended to alleviate pain in his right hand.
