Remy Gardner Secures MotoGP Return with Yamaha in Place of Injured Alex Rins for German Grand Prix
Announcement: Remy Gardner Steps In for Yamaha at MotoGP
Remy Gardner fills in for the sidelined Alex Rins at the German MotoGP event.
This weekend in Germany, Remy Gardner is set to make his MotoGP comeback, having been announced as the substitute for the injured Alex Rins at the official Monster Yamaha team.
Following his 2021 Moto2 championship victory, Gardner experienced a challenging 2022 season in MotoGP with Tech3 KTM, ending up 23rd in the overall rankings.
The Australian rider transitioned to the World Superbike Championship with Yamaha, following the loss of his RC16 spot to Augusto Fernandez.
"To begin, I'm wishing Alex a speedy recovery and all the best," Gardner expressed.
I'm truly thrilled to take on this opportunity. I want to express my sincere gratitude to Yamaha for giving me the chance to compete this weekend. I'm looking forward to utilizing this as an invaluable learning experience.
"I'm thrilled to return to MotoGP for a single race with a brand new bike. It's always a wonderful experience, so I'm eager to make the most of this weekend. I'm truly grateful for this chance and would like to extend a heartfelt 'Thank you' to Yamaha."
Rins had operations on his wrist and ankle on Monday night after experiencing a severe highside crash at turn 1 during the Dutch MotoGP event at Assen.
Rins stated, "The operation was successful, and I'm on my way back home now. Sadly, I'll have to sit out the upcoming Grand Prix, but I'm looking forward to making a quick return. Even with this minor setback, our drive to continue pushing forward is stronger than before."
Massimo Meregalli, the team's director, expressed relief, stating, "Firstly, I want to emphasize our collective relief that Alex's operation was successful and the injuries from the highside crash weren't as severe as they could have been. We're all hoping for his quick recovery and eagerly anticipating his return."
Secondly, our gratitude extends to Remy Gardner and the GYTR GRT Yamaha WorldSBK team for enabling his participation at the Sachsenring with minimal notice.
"We're confident that this will be a fascinating journey for him, and the team is committed to ensuring he feels embraced and encouraged during this weekend's challenging learning process."
Remy Gardner, whose father Wayne clinched the 500cc world championship in 1987, secured his inaugural podium finish in the WorldSBK series at Assen this year.
At 26 years old, he ranks seventh in the World Superbike standings, positioned as the top second R1 competitor, trailing behind Andrea Locatelli who is in fifth place.
Gardner, who stands as Yamaha's sole WorldSBK competitor with experience from a previous MotoGP season, secured the 15th position while racing for Tech3 in the 2022 German MotoGP. This followed his victory at Sachsenring in 2021, where he triumphed as a Moto2 competitor.
Yamaha's MotoGP test pilot, Cal Crutchlow, was forced to withdraw from a scheduled wild-card appearance at Mugello the previous month because of issues arising from a treatment aimed at alleviating discomfort in his right hand.
