Pramac’s Shift to Yamaha: A Decision Fueled by Ducati’s Overlook of Martin for Marquez
Pramac leader Paolo Campinoti acknowledges feeling disappointed with Ducati's decision to pick Marc Marquez over Jorge Martin, which influenced their move to Yamaha.
During the Dutch MotoGP weekend, Pramac secured a significant seven-year agreement with Yamaha. However, Paolo Campnoti later explained the reasons behind their decision to switch from Ducati, despite it being considered the top bike on the grid.
Campinoti has witnessed several of his squad's emerging talents secure a spot with the official Ducati team in the past. However, he found it difficult to come to terms with Jorge Martin being passed over for such an opportunity.
Martin has faced rejection from the factory Ducati squad on two occasions, initially in 2022 when Enea Bastianini surpassed him in the competition to team up with Bagnaia, and then again recently at Mugello, where Marquez outperformed him to secure a spot.
Campinoti acknowledged that Martin's loss left both him and the team feeling disappointed by the decisions of Ducati's leadership.
In an interview with MotoGP.com, Campinoti expressed, "We have a deep faith in Yamaha's initiative. We are confident in Yamaha's potential and capability to make a comeback. Our journey with Ducati felt complete, and there were certain decisions we found ourselves at odds with. Serving as Ducati's junior team was once our aspiration."
Additionally, our goal was to attract new, young talent to our team. We've succeeded in doing this on numerous occasions, yet this year we've experienced a bit of a setback. Not to say we're disappointed, as that's not quite the right word, but we do feel somewhat let down.
We believed that Martin was the more suitable applicant for membership. We observed a shift in strategy that no longer aligned with our objectives.
"Afterwards, we encountered another fantastic chance and chose to pursue it."
Pramac, set to bid farewell to top racer Jorge Martin as he moves to Aprilia in the upcoming season, has a pair of vacancies to fill alongside Yamaha for 2025.
In discussing Martin, Campinoti took his criticism a notch higher by accusing Ducati of failing to acknowledge their success.
Martin remained in competition for the championship against Bagnaia up to the final race of last season, during which he helped propel Pramac to victory in the team standings, sharing this achievement with Johann Zarco.
"Absolutely, it acted as the catalyst because lacking enthusiasm in your work means you miss the mark. Our goal was to elevate young riders to a higher tier," Campinoti elaborated.
"When your efforts go unnoticed or unrewarded, leading to failure, it often leaves you doubting whether your actions are correct."
"There exists another excellent chance, and their aspirations align with ours, making it the right time for a transition."
