Pramac Boss Campinoti Reveals Rift with Ducati Over Marquez Selection, Spurs Move to Yamaha
Pramac's chief, Paolo Campinoti, confessed that they were disappointed when Ducati selected Marc Marquez instead of Jorge Martin, which influenced their decision to partner with Yamaha.
During the Dutch MotoGP weekend, Pramac inked a significant seven-year contract with Yamaha. However, Paolo Campnoti later explained the reasons behind their decision to part ways with Ducati, despite it being considered the top-performing bike on the grid.
Campinoti has witnessed numerous young riders from his team secure a factory Ducati seat in the past, but he found it unacceptable that Jorge Martin was passed over.
Martin has faced rejection from the Ducati factory team on two occasions. The first instance occurred in 2022 when Enea Bastianini outperformed him in the competition to secure a spot alongside Bagnaia. More recently, a few weeks ago at Mugello, Marquez similarly surpassed him.
Campinoti acknowledges that Martin's loss caused both him and the team to feel disappointed in Ducati's management.
In an interview with MotoGP.com, Campinoti expressed confidence in Yamaha's project, asserting their belief in Yamaha's potential to make a comeback. He mentioned that their period with Ducati had come to an end, noting disagreements and decisions that were not mutually shared. Campinoti added that being Ducati's junior team had been their aspiration.
“Our goal was also to recruit young riders to the red team. We have successfully done this multiple times, but this year we felt somewhat; not exactly disappointed, but we did feel let down.”
"We believed that Martin was the superior choice to become a member. We noticed a shift in strategy that no longer aligned with our direction."
"We came across another fantastic opportunity and chose to pursue it."
Pramac, who will be losing their top rider Jorge Martin to Aprilia next season, have two vacancies to fill with Yamaha for 2025.
However, when discussing Martin, Campinoti took it a step further by holding Ducati responsible for not acknowledging their success.
Martin was in the running for the championship against Bagnaia until the final race of last season, and he, together with Johann Zarco, led Pramac to win the teams’ championship.
“Absolutely, it was the catalyst because if you're not passionate about your work, it's difficult to achieve your goals. Our aim was to develop young riders and help them advance to the next level,” Campinoti remarked.
"When your efforts go unacknowledged or unrewarded, you may start to believe that you're not on the right path."
"This was an excellent opportunity that aligned with our ambitions, so it was the right time to make a change."
