Powering Up Profits: How EV Charging Stations Are Boosting Local Business Revenue, MIT Study Reveals
Nearby establishments benefit financially from proximity to electric vehicle charging points, according to a recent MIT study. These public charging points not only encourage the use of electric vehicles but also boost local commerce.
Researchers conducted an analysis using information gathered from more than 4,000 electric vehicle charging points and financial activity from approximately 140,000 companies within California. The investigation utilized anonymous transaction records from credit and debit cards to monitor fluctuations in consumer expenditure. The timeframe for the data collection spanned from 2019 to June 2023, deliberately excluding the year 2020 to avoid any distortion of findings due to the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak.

The study utilizing this collection of information revealed that the establishment of a charging station in California resulted in an increase in yearly revenue for neighboring businesses, with an average uptick of roughly $1,500 in 2019, and approximately $400 from January 2021 to mid-2023.
Researchers examined if the presence of charging stations was responsible for the observed rise in spending by looking at the financial records of shops close to a charging station, both prior to and subsequent to its establishment. They also looked at the financials of comparable shops not in proximity to charging stations during the same period for comparison.

Charging stations not only encourage electric vehicle owners to increase their spending at local shops, but they can also be a source of revenue. A BP official mentioned in 2022 that, given the right conditions, rapid charging points may match the earnings of traditional fuel dispensers. Furthermore, a recent AutoPacific research revealed that those who drive electric vehicles are looking for amenities similar to those offered at gas stations, suggesting an additional strategy to entice motorists to patronize nearby establishments.
The significance of the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and its supported National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program is highlighted by the possible economic impact they could have. The NEVI program's objective is to establish a widespread network of 500,000 electric vehicle charging stations. Though the implementation is gradual because of various regional regulations and the need for synchronized state plans, the data offers a glimpse into the economic expansion that could ensue from these initiatives.
