Oscar Piastri triumphs as Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz experience crashes
Oscar Piastri impressively surpassed Charles Leclerc to secure his second Formula 1 win at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, an event that concluded with a striking crash involving Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz.
Starting from the front, Leclerc was in command during the initial phase of the race. However, his lead was unexpectedly challenged when Piastri caught up and executed an astonishing overtaking maneuver on the inside at Turn 1 during the 20th lap.
Throughout the race, the duo was closely matched, constantly vying for the lead. However, Piastri's remarkable ability to defend his position at crucial sections of the circuit enabled him to maintain his advantage over Leclerc. Despite Leclerc's streak of four consecutive pole positions in Baku, he was unable to secure his inaugural win on the circuit adjacent to the Caspian Sea.
During a weekend when McLaren officially announced their decision to prioritize Lando Norris to enhance his prospects for the championship, there was ultimately no requirement for team directives following a disappointing qualifying session that placed Norris in a less favorable 15th position.
The race saw a thrilling moment just before the final lap when Sainz and Perez collided in their fight for third place, right behind Leclerc. Perez made contact with Sainz's Ferrari as they approached Turn 3, causing both vehicles to crash into the inside barriers, which led to the deployment of the Virtual Safety Car.
George Russell of Mercedes capitalized fully to secure a third-place finish on the podium, surpassing Lando Norris. Norris delivered a remarkable rally, advancing into the scoring positions and managing to pass his principal championship competitor, Verstappen, with just three laps remaining, thereby narrowing the gap in the title race to 59 points against the Dutch driver.
Following an irritated Verstappen, Aston Martin's Fernando Alonso, Alex Albon, and Franco Colapinto ensured a dual points finish for Williams.
Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, beginning the race from the pit lane, along with his fellow British driver Oliver Bearman, secured the last available points by finishing ninth and tenth for Mercedes and Haas, respectively.
McLaren has now extended their lead over Red Bull in the constructors' championship to 20 points.
