Peter Windsor Dismisses Russell’s Pirelli Complaints as “Nonsense,” Questions Mercedes Driver’s Approach Post-Azerbaijan GP
George Russell's grievances about Pirelli tires in Azerbaijan dismissed as "utter rubbish"
"This issue would be evident across the pitlane if it were true. However, it's not apparent at McLaren, which raises questions."
Ex-Formula 1 team boss Peter Windsor has dismissed George Russell's grievances about Pirelli tyres as "utterly baseless."
After the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, Russell openly criticized the unpredictable performance of the Pirelli tires.
Russell experienced that the Mercedes performed poorly on the medium tyres during the initial stages of the race but demonstrated potential for victory after changing to the hard tyres.
Following the race, Russell demanded "meaningful discussions" with Pirelli, characterizing the circumstances as "inadequate."
Nevertheless, Windsor, who formerly served as a team manager for Williams and Ferrari, contends that Russell's hypothesis is at odds with McLaren's steady performance.
On The F1 Hour podcast, Windsor expressed his views, stating, "The idea of a tyre lottery is utterly absurd. If there truly were significant disparities between one set of soft tyres and another, or between sets of medium tyres, then…
"It seems to be appearing all along the pitlane, yet it's conspicuously absent at McLaren. One has to ponder the reason behind this."
"Perhaps it's to a small extent, but not any more than what you'd have received from Bridgestone or Michelin regardless."
Russell faced criticism for how he managed an incident involving a yellow flag in Azerbaijan.
The Mercedes racer avoided a penalty for speeding during the yellow flag period in the first qualifying session.
Windsor views Russell's actions as "risky" and believes he has no point to demonstrate.
"Windsor remarked that it was unwise of George to declare his intention to proceed regardless."
"How is that smart? Honestly, it's actually quite risky."
"George has no need to demonstrate his manliness or courage. It's evident in his performance on the race track."
Russell secured a third-place finish in Baku following an incident involving Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz on the second-to-last lap.
