Perez Warned Over Costly Repairs After Controversial Clash with Sainz in Azerbaijan Grand Prix
Sergio Perez cautioned over potential costs after being held responsible for collision with Carlos Sainz
Sergio Perez reminded of the consequences for damaging Red Bull equipment
Mark Webber has pointed the finger at Sergio Perez for the altercation in Azerbaijan involving Carlos Sainz.
In the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, a collision occurred between Red Bull's Perez and Ferrari's Sainz during the second-to-last lap, leading to an early exit for both drivers from the race.
The struggle for a top-three finish escalated into a physical altercation following Perez's inability to surpass Charles Leclerc for the second position.
"Charles is putting up a strong defense. Coming out of Turn 1, Sergio didn't perform well," former F1 driver Webber provided analysis for Channel 4.
Carlos gains momentum on his teammate and slows down on the outer side. He slightly veers off course.
"Carlos struggles to pick up speed and lags behind coming out of the second turn. Meanwhile, Charles has surged ahead."
"Sainz and Perez are competing for the slipstream and they've collided."
"The effect is truly pitiful, utterly pitiful, and carries significant consequences!
Sergio is attempting to navigate into the tow. At this current pace, the differences are slight.
"Sergio's maintenance costs for the year are remarkable."
Webber was questioned on whether Perez should bear a greater share of the responsibility.
"He can see more of the Ferrari now," he mentioned.
"When you gaze into the mirror, it's uncertain where he is supposed to be."
"Sergio ought to have allowed him additional space to navigate that straightaway."
"He was in excellent condition with his tires, and he completed the race rapidly."
Perez's unexpected retirement from the race robbed him of a scarce opportunity to outperform Max Verstappen, who had a tough race finishing in fifth place.
A significant consequence for Red Bull stems from Perez's lost points, which helped McLaren surpass them to take the top spot in the constructors' championship.
The officials looked into the collision between Perez and Sainz but determined it was an incident typical of racing.
Sainz refuted claims of executing an "aggressive" move.
