Pedro Acosta’s Final Shot: The German MotoGP and the Quest to Topple Marquez’s Youngest Winner Record
German MotoGP: Pedro Acosta’s final opportunity to surpass Marquez’s record as the youngest winner
It's a critical moment for Pedro Acosta to break Marc Marquez’s record for being the youngest winner.
This weekend's German Grand Prix presents Pedro Acosta with his final opportunity to surpass Marc Marquez's record as the youngest winner of a MotoGP race.
Marquez secured his first MotoGP win during his second race at the Circuit of the Americas in 2013, when he was just 20 years and 63 days old.
Acosta, who earlier this season broke Marquez’s record for the youngest rider to achieve consecutive MotoGP podium finishes, celebrated his 20th birthday on May 25th.
This indicates that by the time MotoGP resumes post-summer break with the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on August 4, he will have surpassed the 63-day mark.
The Sachsenring represents his final chance, but the Tech3 KTM racer has consistently minimized its significance, calling it a 'different era'.
"I believe not," Acosta remarked earlier regarding the prospect of becoming the youngest winner. "Ultimately, this is a different era for MotoGP."
"You can discuss and contemplate this, but this MotoGP era marks a distinct phase in our careers."
Acosta clinched victory at last year's German Moto2 Grand Prix. However, given that no KTMs have made it to the MotoGP podium in the last five races, starting from Acosta's second-place finish at COTA, achieving a win will necessitate a notable improvement in performance for the RC16.
"We're going to Sachsenring, a circuit where I typically have better fortunes, and I believe it will be more compatible with our motorcycle,” commented Acosta, who fell from seventh place during the final lap of the Dutch Grand Prix on Sunday.
"Overall, our weekend in Assen went quite well. We managed to perform strongly and stay competitive up until the crash, even though this track isn't typically one of my favorites. Heading into Germany, we'll maintain our usual strategy, tackling the new track incrementally. We'll gauge our performance starting on Friday!"
"I am excited about it; let's make it great before the summer vacation!"
Nicolas Goyon, the manager of the Tech3 KTM team, anticipates that this weekend will surpass their experience at Assen.
"The Sachsenring circuit is quite distinct from Assen, and I believe it offers us a great chance to recover our performance," he stated. "It is the shortest track in the championship, favoring left-hand turns, and involves extensive leaning and intense braking."
"We are confident that Pedro Acosta will appreciate these particular traits. He secured a victory last season in Moto2 with a comfortable lead and will be highly driven to excel following his accident in the closing lap at Assen."
Following a calm weekend in The Netherlands, the weather at Sachsenring could be unpredictable: "Currently, the forecast is unclear, so we need to be prepared for various possibilities."
Acosta could have had another opportunity to surpass Marquez’s record if the Kazakhstan event hadn’t been delayed from its original dates of June 14-16.
In the Tech3 pit box, teammate Augusto Fernandez managed to secure two points by finishing in 14th place after a challenging weekend at Assen.
He expressed his anticipation for the trip to Sachsenring, stating his hope to perform better compared to their difficulties at Assen.
"The course will contrast significantly with Assen, featuring rapid turns and numerous braking points, but it's a design that I really enjoy."
"Last year went fairly well for us. Currently, our situations have changed, but I aim to be more competitive, so we will put in our utmost effort."
Last year at the Sachsenring, Fernandez, a newcomer to MotoGP, ended up in eleventh place.
