Pedro Acosta’s Final Shot at History: A Race Against Time to Break Marquez’s Record at German MotoGP
German MotoGP: Pedro Acosta Faces Final Opportunity to Surpass Marquez's Youngest Winner Milestone
Pedro Acosta is at a critical juncture to eclipse Marc Marquez's record as the youngest victor.
In the upcoming German Grand Prix this weekend, Pedro Acosta is presented with his final opportunity to surpass Marc Marquez by becoming the youngest victor in a MotoGP race.
In just his second MotoGP appearance, Marquez secured his inaugural win at the Circuit of the Americas (COTA) in 2013, becoming a victor at the young age of 20 years and 63 days
Acosta, who earlier this season surpassed Marquez's record for consecutive MotoGP podium finishes at the youngest age, celebrated his 20th birthday on May 25th.
This implies that by the time MotoGP resumes following the summer hiatus, with the British MotoGP taking place at Silverstone on August 4, he will have exceeded the 63-day mark.
Therefore, Sachsenring represents his final chance, though the Tech3 KTM competitor has consistently minimized it, referring to it as a 'distinct epoch'.
"Actually, I don't believe that's the case," Acosta had earlier remarked about becoming the youngest victor. "Ultimately, we're in a distinct era of MotoGP.
"Discussing and contemplating this, one realizes that we're in a distinct period of MotoGP history, marking a divergence in our professional trajectories."
Acosta clinched the title at the previous year's Moto2 Grand Prix in Germany, but with KTM bikes missing from the MotoGP podium in the last five races since Acosta's second-place finish at COTA, a win would necessitate a considerable improvement in performance for the RC16.
"Acosta expressed optimism about the upcoming race at Sachsenring, believing the track's characteristics might favor their motorcycle more. This comes after Acosta's unfortunate exit from the Dutch Grand Prix, where he crashed during the final lap while in seventh place."
Overall, our time in Assen turned out pretty well. We managed to perform well and stay competitive up until the accident, despite it being a track that usually doesn't play to my strengths. As we head into Germany, our strategy remains unchanged; we'll take it gradually, especially since we're dealing with a new track. We'll first get a sense of things on Friday!
"I'm excited about it, let's make this one count before we hit the summer vacation!"
Nicolas Goyon, the team manager for Tech3 KTM, anticipates an improvement in the upcoming weekend's performance compared to their results at Ass
"The Sachsenring circuit presents a distinct design compared to Assen, offering us a great chance to recover," he mentioned. "As the championship's briefest circuit, predominantly favoring left turns, it demands extensive periods of leaning and forceful braking."
"We are confident that Pedro Acosta will appreciate these particular traits, given his victory in last season's Moto2 by a comfortable margin. Moreover, his enthusiasm to excel is expected to be at an all-time high, especially after his mishap on the last lap at Assen."
Nonetheless, following a consistent weather pattern over the weekend in The Netherlands, the weather conditions at Sachsenring could be unpredictable: "Currently, the weather forecast appears somewhat unsure, so we must prepare for various outcomes."
Acosta could have had another opportunity to surpass Marquez's record if the event in Kazakhstan hadn't been delayed from its original schedule of June 14-16.
Across the Tech3 pit garage, Augusto Fernandez managed to secure a couple of points by finishing 14th, following yet another challenging weekend at the Assen circuit for the team.
"I'm excited about going to Sachsenring and aiming to perform better than in Assen, where we faced significant challenges," he stated.
"The track's layout, characterized by its rapid turns and significant braking demands, stands in stark contrast to Assen. However, it's a configuration that I greatly enjoy."
"Last year turned out quite well for us, even though we're in various locations at the moment. However, I'm aiming for a higher level of competitiveness, so we're committed to putting in our utmost effort."
In his first year competing in MotoGP, Fernandez secured the eleventh position at the Sachsenring circuit.
