Oliver Bearman’s Historic F1 Journey: Reflecting on a Landmark Battle with Lewis Hamilton and Scoring Points for Two Teams
Oliver Bearman contemplates his historic Formula 1 moment after a challenging duel with Lewis Hamilton.
Oliver Bearman of Haas etched his name into F1 annals by achieving the remarkable feat of earning points for two distinct teams in his initial two Grand Prix appearances.
Filling in for Haas's usual driver Kevin Magnussen, who faced a one-race suspension due to gathering 12 penalty points within a year, Bearman secured the last available point in Baku by coming in 10th.
The 19-year-old British driver, set to compete full-time in Formula 1 next year with the American team, ascended into the points positions after a late dramatic crash involving Sergio Perez and Carlos Sainz.
Upon being surpassed by Mercedes icon Lewis Hamilton during the final laps, Bearman lauded the seven-time world champion for engaging in a fight that was "incredibly fair yet challenging."
"Bearman mentioned that there's a comforting assurance in knowing that when you navigate the outer path, he'll ensure there's room for you."
"In the first turn, I was confident he wouldn't push me into a wall, a certainty I don't always have with other drivers. It's reassuring to know and makes racing against him consistently tough but fair."
Bearman elaborated, saying, “I was aggressively trying to pass Franco for several laps, which caused my tires to heat up significantly. It was precisely then that he seized the opportunity to overtake me with ease.
Subsequently, I required several rounds to regain my position and nearly managed to re-engage with the DRS. It's frustrating that I allowed him to pass me; however, with someone of his caliber trailing, you simply can't afford minor errors.
Bearman managed to get ahead of his Haas teammate Nico Hulkenberg when the latter reduced speed, worried he might have sustained damage during the mishap that involved Perez and Sainz.
"Bearman mentioned, "It turned green once more, and I was able to catch him alongside Lewis."
"I managed to pass him. I feel sorry for him because he had an issue that not only caused him to lose his spot to me but also to Franco. However, I'm glad to have secured the point."
Bearman made an impressive entry into Formula 1 in Saudi Arabia, securing a seventh-place finish while substituting for Ferrari.
