Ocon Blasts Alpine’s “Nonsense” Team Orders After Frustrating Canadian GP
Frustrated Esteban Ocon Criticizes Alpine for "Absurd" F1 Team Instructions
Esteban Ocon expressed discontent with Alpine's decision to issue team instructions towards the end of the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.
Esteban Ocon has expressed his disapproval of Alpine's decision regarding team orders, which he believes were absurd, during the F1 Canadian Grand Prix.
The French driver, penalized with a five-place grid drop for colliding with his Alpine teammate Pierre Gasly during the previous Monaco race, managed to fight his way from the back of the field to run in ninth position during the final laps of Sunday's Montreal race.
Alpine instructed Ocon to yield his position to Gasly, who was right behind him in 10th, enabling him to pursue RB’s Daniel Ricciardo for the eighth position during the closing laps.
Initially, Ocon was resistant but eventually allowed Gasly to pass him during the second-to-last lap at Turn 8, however, by then, it had become too late for his teammate to effectively challenge Ricciardo.
Gasly secured a ninth-place finish, while Ocon contributed to Alpine's significant points gain by finishing 10th.
"Ocon expressed to Sky Sports F1 his satisfaction that both cars managed to score points, though he believed the positions should have been swapped for that event."
"I received directions to allow Pierre to overtake with two laps remaining in order to pursue Daniel [Ricciardo], who was leading by two and a half seconds and was too quick for us. Therefore, the decision made no sense.
"I've fulfilled my role by being a collaborative member of the team. I have consistently followed the guidelines provided to me. This has been my approach throughout my career, without any deviation."
"I've completed my portion of the work while the team has not today, which is quite disappointing."
At the conclusion of the season, Ocon will part ways with Alpine, and he was queried about his opinion on whether his departure is the reason behind being ordered to give up his place to Gasly.
"He replied, 'We will give them the advantage of uncertainty.'"
Transmission over team communication
Josh Peckett: "Esteban, you need to let Pierre pass, okay? There's a two-second gap to Hulkenberg behind."
Esteban Ocon inquired, "Why is that so?"
JP: "The aim is to go after Ricciardo."
EO: "Then let it go!"
JP: "Alright buddy. That's what's being asked. Just three laps left."
