Michele Pirro Clinches Seventh Italian Superbike Title, Cementing Legacy with Ducati
Michele Pirro clinches his seventh Italian Superbike championship
Ducati's MotoGP test rider Michele Pirro has won the CIV Italian Superbike title once more.
Michele Pirro, who serves as the primary test rider for Ducati Corse's MotoGP and WorldSBK teams, has secured his seventh championship in the CIV Italian Superbike series.
Pirro, who competes for the Barni Ducati team—which also includes Danilo Petrucci in the World Superbike Championship (WorldSBK) and Yari Montella in the World Supersport Championship (WorldSSP)—clinched the championship at Mugello last weekend.
Pirro secured his seventh championship in the CIV Superbike category, having previously won titles in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, as well as in 2021 and 2022. This victory also marked his 10th overall championship in the CIV series, adding to his earlier triumphs in the Superstock 1000 class in 2007 and 2008, and his Supersport championship in
This achievement places Pirro third in the historical rankings for CIV championships, trailing only Tarquinio Provini with 11 titles and Giacomo Agostini with 16 titles, the latter having secured 10 consecutive 500cc championships from 1968 to 1977.
This title follows the contentious conclusion of the 2023 CIV Superbike season at Imola. During the race, Lorenzo Zanetti, who was competing against Pirro for the championship, collided with Pirro at the Variante Bassa. This incident caused Pirro to fall and allowed Zanetti to secure the championship, making Pirro a seven-time Superbike Champion.
Zanetti chose not to compete for the CIV championship this year. Instead, he has been participating in the IDM German Superbike Championship. He started his IDM season strongly with a victory in the first race at the Sachsenring. However, his only other podium finish was in the second race of the latest round at the Nurburgring. Meanwhile, Ilya Mikhalchik has dominated the championship, securing his fourth IDM Superbike title this year.
Zanetti’s absence has been marked by an outstanding season for Pirro. Over five rounds, the #51 rider has secured victory in seven out of ten races. Alessandro Delbianco won when Pirro didn’t complete Race 1 during the initial Mugello round and again when Pirro placed fourth in Race 2 at the second Misano round. Last weekend, Luca Bernardi triumphed in Race 2 at Mugello as Pirro secured the championship title.
The last event of the 2024 CIV Superbike season is scheduled to be held at Imola from September 27 to 29.
