Michele Pirro Clinches Seventh CIV Superbike Title, Cementing Ducati Legacy at Mugello
Michele Pirro Claims His Seventh Italian Superbike Championship
Ducati MotoGP test rider Michele Pirro has once again captured the CIV Italian Superbike championship.
Michele Pirro, who serves as the official test rider for Ducati Corse's MotoGP and WorldSBK teams, has secured his seventh championship in the CIV Italian Superbike series.
Last weekend at Mugello, Pirro clinched the championship while competing for the Barni Ducati team, which also features Danilo Petrucci in WorldSBK and Yari Montella in WorldSSP.
Pirro claimed his seventh championship in the CIV Superbike category, adding to his previous titles from 2015, 2016 through 2019, and 2021 to 2022. This victory also marked his 10th overall title in the CIV series, which includes his Superstock 1000 championships from 2007 and 2008, and a Supersport championship in 2009.
This count places Pirro in third place in the history of CIV championships, following Tarquinio Provini with 11 titles and Giacomo Agostini with 16. Notably, Agostini achieved 10 consecutive 500cc championships from 1968 to 1977.
This championship win follows a contentious conclusion to the 2023 CIV Superbike season held at Imola last year. During the race, Lorenzo Zanetti, who was contending for the title, collided with his competitor Michele Pirro in the Variante Bassa section. This incident caused Pirro, who has now won the Superbike Championship seven times, to crash, ultimately giving the championship title to Zanetti.
Zanetti, in a twist, opted not to defend his CIV championship this year. He has chosen to compete in the IDM German Superbike Championship instead. Zanetti began his IDM campaign triumphantly, securing a victory in the season's opening race at the Sachsenring. However, his only other podium finish was in the second race of the latest round at the Nurburgring. Meanwhile, most of the victories have been claimed by Ilya Mikhalchik, who has captured his fourth IDM Superbike title this year.
During Zanetti’s time away, Pirro has had an outstanding season. Over five rounds, rider #51 has secured seven victories out of 10 races. Alessandro Delbianco claimed a win when Pirro did not complete Race 1 at the first Mugello round and when Pirro placed fourth in Race 2 at the second Misano round. Most recently, Luca Bernardi won Race 2 at Mugello last weekend, while Pirro secured the championship title.
The concluding event of the 2024 CIV Superbike season is scheduled for September 27-29 at Imola.
