Michele Pirro Clinches Seventh CIV Italian Superbike Title with Dominant Performance at Mugello
Michele Pirro clinches his seventh Italian Superbike championship
Ducati MotoGP test rider Michele Pirro has once again claimed the CIV Italian Superbike championship.
Michele Pirro, who serves as the official test rider for Ducati Corse's MotoGP and WorldSBK teams, has secured his seventh title in the CIV Italian Superbike Championship.
Pirro, who races for the Barni Ducati team—also the team behind Danilo Petrucci in WorldSBK and Yari Montella in WorldSSP—secured the championship last weekend at Mugello.
Michele Pirro clinched his seventh championship in the CIV Superbike category, adding to his previous titles won in 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019, and 2021–22. This victory also marked his 10th overall championship in the CIV series, which includes his Superstock 1000 titles from 2007 and 2008, and a Supersport title from 2009.
This count places Pirro in third place on the all-time list for CIV championships, trailing Tarquinio Provini with 11 titles and Giacomo Agostini with 16 titles. Notably, Agostini secured 10 consecutive 500cc championships from 1968 to 1977.
This title follows the contentious conclusion of the 2023 CIV Superbike season at Imola. During the final race, Lorenzo Zanetti, who was competing against Pirro for the championship, collided with him at the Variante Bassa chicane. The incident caused Pirro to crash, ultimately giving Zanetti the championship win.
In an interesting turn of events, Zanetti chose not to defend his CIV title this year. Instead, he has been competing in the IDM German Superbike Championship. Zanetti started his IDM season strongly by winning the opening race at the Sachsenring, but his only other podium finish was in the second race of the latest round at the Nurburgring. During this period, most of the victories have been claimed by Ilya Mikhalchik, who secured his fourth IDM Superbike championship title this year.
During Zanetti’s absence, Pirro has delivered an outstanding performance this season. Over the course of five rounds, he has triumphed in seven out of ten races. Alessandro Delbianco secured a win when Pirro did not complete Race 1 in the initial Mugello round, and he also won when Pirro finished fourth in Race 2 of the second Misano round. Last weekend at Mugello, Luca Bernardi claimed victory in Race 2 as Pirro secured the championship title.
The concluding race of the 2024 CIV Superbike season is scheduled to be held at Imola from September 27 to 29.
