Mercedes’ Silverstone Triumph: Wolff Teases Verstappen Amid Speculations on 2025 Line-up
Toto Wolff's recent comment about Max Verstappen's pursuit: "Many chances to examine the car"
"I'm not sure. He [Verstappen] has plenty of chances to inspect the car during the race."
Toto Wolff humorously remarked that Max Verstappen had "plenty of chances" to observe Mercedes' enhanced Formula 1 vehicle following Lewis Hamilton's victory at the 2024 British Grand Prix.
Mercedes demonstrated significant progress at Silverstone, dominating the front row with George Russell clinching his second pole position of the season.
Under dry weather conditions, Mercedes demonstrated superior speed, distancing themselves from the McLarens and Verstappen who were trailing behind.
An excellent performance by Hamilton, paired with flawless tactics, enabled the seven-time world champion to secure his first victory since 2021, finishing ahead of Verstappen.
The timing of Mercedes' improved performance is intriguing, especially since they haven't revealed who will partner with Russell next year.
Wolff continues to show interest in recruiting Verstappen, despite Verstappen's commitment to staying with Red Bull, especially given that they currently have the leading car in Formula 1.
During an interview following the race at Silverstone, attended by Crash.net, Wolff was questioned about whether Mercedes' recent performance boost might impact Verstappen's choice to potentially join the team.
He responded, saying, "I'm not sure. Verstappen has plenty of chances to observe the car during the race."
Mercedes' return to the forefront of Formula 1 might impact their decision on whether to choose a newcomer, such as Antonelli, for the team instead of Carlos Sainz.
Despite improved performances, Wolff dismissed the idea that this would influence their decision regarding a second driver for the 2025 season.
"It doesn’t affect our perspective," he mentioned. "I've consistently stated that our priority is a fast car. Once we have that, we bring in the driver and make it engaging for our primary drivers."
"Essentially, I believe we should remain composed, keep progressing through the season, maintain our focus on the car, and then reassess if our options remain unchanged."
“But it’s not as though everything is being completely turned on its head.”
